Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT)
The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good practice in recruiting, retaining and promoting women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) in higher education. The Charter aims to address gender imbalances in STEMM disciplines, based on the belief that endeavours in these fields will be enriched when they can benefit from the talent of the whole population, and when barriers to progress in academic careers are removed.
Since its launch in 2005, the Athena SWAN programme has been widely implemented in the UK higher education sector, where it is run by the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU). The Charter was expanded to Ireland in 2014 on a pilot basis, managed by ECU and supported by the HEA. By signing the Charter, the Irish universities and Institutes of Technology have made a progressive commitment to embed its six principles in their policies, practices and culture.
The (original) Charter Principles
1. To address gender inequalities requires commitment and action from everyone, at all levels of the organisation
2. To tackle the unequal representation of women in science requires changing cultures and attitudes across the organisation
3. The absence of diversity at management and policy-making levels has broad implications which the organisation will examine
4. The high loss rate of women in science is an urgent concern which the organisation will address
5. The system of short-term contracts has particularly negative consequences for the retention and progression of women in science, which the organisation recognises
6. There are both personal and structural obstacles to women making the transition from PhD into a sustainable academic career in science, which require the active consideration of the organisation
In November 2018, Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) applied for the Athena Swan (AS) Bronze award with the view to attracting and retaining the brightest and most competent educators and researchers to guide the next generation of great thinkers.
The institute is firmly committed to the principles that underpin the AS agenda, including gender equality, and wants to ensure the continued growth of an inclusive campus culture where employee’s multifaceted and intersecting identities are valued, respected and empowered.
Through the attainment of the AS Bronze Award, the institute will continue to develop an effective strategy, committed to the ongoing development of effective and progressive policies, procedures and initiatives, subsequently leading to higher levels of female applicants for positions and promotions, enhanced job satisfaction, a better work environment and higher numbers of female students in Research and STEMM disciplines.
Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) has been designated as a College of Sanctuary in recognition of a range of initiatives demonstrating a commitment to welcoming asylum seekers and refugees into the college community and fostering a culture of inclusion for all. AIT is the third HEI in Ireland - following DCU and UL - to attain this accolade and is the first recipient of the College of Sanctuary which is awarded by Places of Sanctuary, an organisation that supports efforts in Ireland and the UK to build a culture of hospitality for people seeking sanctuary.
The award was marked at a celebratory event held on campus which was attended by all of the of the stakeholders involved including the team from AIT Theresa Ryan and Dr. Chris McDermott who lead the committee for the Integration of Asylum Seekers and Refugees, the residents of the local direct provision center, New Horizon volunteer group and Westmeath Community Development.
Cost of Living
We offer one of the most cost-effective routes to third-level education.
In Athlone, the plentiful high-quality accommodation is a fraction of the price in the major cities, as low as €75 per week for a single room in a brand new purpose-built apartment, even less in a house share.
Our central location and excellent transport links allow many of our students to opt for the added economy of remaining in the family home while studying, especially our mature students and life-long learners. Annual parking permits cost a nominal €20.
Many businesses in the area offer discounts to students, as do most of the transport providers.
With a wealth of businesses in the town, from international fashion retailers to restaurants, bars and coffee shops, there is also ample opportunity to supplement your income with part-time work.
Sports scholarships worth up to €4,000 in total may be awarded to suitable student applicants, to acknowledge and address the added difficulties posed by studying while pursuing elite sporting accomplishment.
We always acknowledge that the transition to third-level study can be more difficult for students from less affluent backgrounds and the student support services can help with financial emergencies. We work to offer an affordable, inclusive third-level experience to all our students.

Through Our Eyes is a joint art exhibition which celebrates TUS student creativity and explores the third level student experience as told through the eyes of our students. This is an opportunity for TUS students to share their unique perspectives and their own lived experience of third level through a variety of creative media.
Students from all disciplines in TUS are invited to submit proposals which may encompass examples of: fine art, design, animation, performance, fashion, the written word, music and socially engaged art practice. A selection of work will be shortlisted for exhibition.
Note to students:
You don’t have to be an artist/designer/musician to submit an application; TUS students are multi-talented and may be engaged in other academic studies as well as being creative in their own right! Both individual and group submissions are warmly welcomed!
TIMELINE
The application period opens in December after the conclusion of the Connect & Engage programme and closes 12pm, 4th January 2023; shortlisting will be completed thereafter.
Shortlisting and final selection will be carried out by a selection panel comprised of staff and students from TUS. Notification to successful students will be at the end of January 2023.
‘Through Your Eyes’ exhibit will take place in February 2023 on the Athlone campus, exact date to be confirmed.
USEFUL INFORMATION:
This initiative is a joint collaboration between the TUS Midlands Student Resource Centre, TUS Midlands Design and Animation Department, the TUS/LSAD Exhibition Society and Limerick School of Art and Design.
The ‘Through Our Eyes’ exhibit will be hosted on the Athlone Campus in the Creative Hub of the award winning Engineering and Informatics Building in February 2023.
Selected work from students in the Midwest will be transported from LSAD to the Athlone campus and will be returned on conclusion of the exhibit.
A bus will be provided to transport exhibiting students from the Midwest to the Athlone campus.
