Why take this course?
The primary aim of the BSc Pharmacy Technician programme is to advance the skills and knowledge of the qualified pharmacy technician. Furthermore, it seeks to enable the graduate to use his/her skills as a pharmacy technician to promote pharmacy practice in the area of pharmaceutical care of the patient and ultimately, to provide additional skills to the pharmacy technician in the areas of clinical pharmacy, medicines management, purchasing, clinical governance, ethics and aseptic practices. This will enable the graduate to consider career development in additional areas.
What will I experience?
Students will attend lectures at AIT Monday to Wednesday and attend pharmacy placement on Thursday and Friday throughout the academic year. Placement is organised by AIT
in conjunction with the student. As well as placement the students will undertake a capstone project which allows them to delve into the research world for the first time. Participation in conferences, poster competitions and lectures by guest speakers from the pharmacy industry will ensure that students are well grounded in all areas of work available to pharmacy technicians
What opportunities might it lead to?
This programme will enable pharmacy technicians to further challenge the knowledge and skills acquired at level 6 whilst also providing them with an opportunity to develop as professionals with the latest skills in medicines management, pharmacy purchasing, clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care, clinical governance and ethics, advanced pharmacy skills, pharmacy research methods and aseptic practices. As it is well recognised that there is pressure on time, workload and responsibilities within the pharmacy setting, it is therefore essential that pharmacy technicians are competent and proficient in undertaking additional roles within their work environment.
As a graduate of this degree, you may be eligible to pursue a Level 8 qualification in a health science domain, for example, health management. A number of graduates of this programme have been successful in entering pharmacy degrees (MPharm) in the Ireland (UCC & RCSI) & UK (Coleraine, Brighton, Kingston, Liverpool & Sunderland).

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Application Procedures for Non-EU Students
Students applying for entry to undergraduate or postgraduate programmes should supply the following information directly to the International Office, Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest on or before 1 May for programmes commencing in September:
Completed TUS application form;
Detailed curriculum vitae;
Certified transcripts of examination results and English language translations of qualifications not issued in English
Evidence of ability to follow classes in the English language (which must satisfy Institute entry requirements for the following programmes)
Foundation level programme: Certificate in English for Academic Studies: Minimum IELTS 4.5 or equivalent.
Pre-sessional Summer programme in English June to August: Minimum IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.
Undergraduate programmes: Minimum IELTS 5.5 with no Band less than 5.0.
Postgraduate programmes: Minimum IELTS 6.0 with no Band less than 5.5 *
*note some postgraduate programmes require minimum IELTS 6.5.
