Bachelor of Business (Honours) Tourism and Hospitality Management
Why take this course?
The exciting, dynamic businesses of Tourism and Hospitality are central to Ireland’s economic recovery. This programme focuses on developing honours degree graduates with the necessary problem solving, critical thinking, and communication skills to become leaders in industry. Successful completion of this programme of study will open up a range of exciting career options for the graduate.
We are a very international department. In the last 3 years more than 150 of our students have had an experience abroad, including entering international competitions, participating in short residential field trips, long term work placement, semesters abroad and conference visits.
What will I experience?
This programme focuses the strategic level content of Tourism, Marketing, Finance and Management. It is delivered using a number of contemporary teaching strategies including lecturers, workshops, and field trips. Dialogue between lectures and learners, and between learners themselves is a central theme within each module. On this course you will learn to:
- Apply a critical, systematic, and mature approach to problem solving within the tourism and hospitality industry;
- Discriminate between alternative management strategies and to successfully manage change;
- Develop your communication and social skills resulting in a self-confident, responsible and enterprising graduate.
Students will achieve the above by being able to:
- Identify and develop strategic level solutions for a real life business problem.
- Manage a simulated business in a competitive market place over a semester.
- Visit and evaluate a successful indigenous tourism business and apply strategic level theories for future planning for the business.
- Become an informed and skilled researcher.
What opportunities might it lead to?
Graduates of this programme have progressed to further study at level 9 in Business in AIT and Tourism, Hospitality, Marketing, and Strategic Management in other third level institutions. Others have found employment in careers such as hotel and leisure management, tourism destination development officers in Ireland and abroad, front office management in hotels, hotel sales and marketing, hotel conference and banqueting management, tourism event planning at local and national level, tourism information officers. Many have used their qualification to work and travel the world at the same time.
Graduates have also completed Postgraduate studies in education and qualified as secondary school teachers in
Career Guidance, Business Studies and Accounting.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Application Procedures for Non-EU Students
Students applying for entry to undergraduate or postgraduate programmes should supply the following information directly to the International Office, Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest on or before 1 May for programmes commencing in September:
Completed TUS application form;
Detailed curriculum vitae;
Certified transcripts of examination results and English language translations of qualifications not issued in English
Evidence of ability to follow classes in the English language (which must satisfy Institute entry requirements for the following programmes)
Foundation level programme: Certificate in English for Academic Studies: Minimum IELTS 4.5 or equivalent.
Pre-sessional Summer programme in English June to August: Minimum IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.
Undergraduate programmes: Minimum IELTS 5.5 with no Band less than 5.0.
Postgraduate programmes: Minimum IELTS 6.0 with no Band less than 5.5 *
*note some postgraduate programmes require minimum IELTS 6.5.
