Bachelor of Science Network Management
Why take this course?
?Networked devices are all around us, from the traditional wired LAN, to wireless, to fibre, to cloud computing and the Internet of Things. All these devices require secure and reliable networks in order to function. The management of Networks is a core function of many organisations.
The student will acquire skills in the configuration and fault finding of network devices including servers, switches, routers and wireless access points and controllers. You will understand the nature of security threats and appropriate protection systems. You will also be introduced to the legal issues associated with data integrity on computer systems and the design and testing of engineering support systems. Project skills will be developed through projects completed in years 2 and 3.

AIT’s Faculty of Engineering and Informatics is housed in one of the most modern and well-equipped facilities of its kind in the country. Lecturers have extensive industry experience which enriches their teaching skills and competencies.
What do I do in the first year?
- Building and testing electronic circuits based on the Arduino microcontroller
- Configuring small networks based on Cisco CCENT
- How a computer works inside the box, based on CompTIA A+
- Introduction to Java programming
- Complete an electronic project
- Computer Applications (Microsoft Office User System)
- Mathematics
Year 2 and 3 extend your knowledge and application of network engineering, you will complete a predefined project in year 2 and have the opportunity to develop your understanding in a particular area of interest in Year 3 with your own project. The project could be in an area such as network management, network security or an Internet of Things application.

Accreditation:
Graduates of this programme are deemed to have reached the educational standard of Associate Engineer by Engineers Ireland. This qualification is recognised under the Sydney Accord, by more than 40 countries world-wide, including the EU, the US, Australia and Canada.
Assessment Information
A range of assessment methods are used on this programme. A high percentage of the overall programme assessment is by way of continuous assessment and project work undertaken by the students, this more closely mimics the work environment. The type of continuous assessment used will vary by module, it can comprise lab reports, skills exams, multiple choice exams, coding design, business plan or project progress reports, project thesis, presentations.
Final exams which place at the end of the semester. Further details will be included in the course manual students receive at the start of the year.

Application Procedures for Non-EU Students
Students applying for entry to undergraduate or postgraduate programmes should supply the following information directly to the International Office, Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest on or before 1 May for programmes commencing in September:
Completed TUS application form;
Detailed curriculum vitae;
Certified transcripts of examination results and English language translations of qualifications not issued in English
Evidence of ability to follow classes in the English language (which must satisfy Institute entry requirements for the following programmes)
Foundation level programme: Certificate in English for Academic Studies: Minimum IELTS 4.5 or equivalent.
Pre-sessional Summer programme in English June to August: Minimum IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.
Undergraduate programmes: Minimum IELTS 5.5 with no Band less than 5.0.
Postgraduate programmes: Minimum IELTS 6.0 with no Band less than 5.5 *
*note some postgraduate programmes require minimum IELTS 6.5.
