Mary Immaculate College

Mary Immaculate College is a distinctive and inclusive university?level, Catholic College of Education and the Liberal Arts, offering undergraduate programmes as well as a range of research-based and taught postgraduate programmes at Certificate, Diploma, Masters and Doctorate levels. Qualifications in the professional development and lifelong learning categories complement the course offering so that MIC now has a range of programmes from Level 4 up to Level 10 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

The programmes of study in the College are among the most highly sought after in the country, demonstrated by the fact that MIC has grown to an enrolment of almost 5,000 students—roughly 25 times the numbers in the early 1990s. The College has also expanded in its ambition, amenities and geographical footprint, but MIC is equally proud of its reputation as a caring institution, where there is genuine concern for the well-being and dignity of the individual. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere is a hallmark of MIC that has endured since its foundation.

The Senior Management team is very proud that MIC is recognised and appreciated for its excellence in teaching, learning and research and its essential contribution to the continuum of academic provision in effective and productive collaboration with its partners in the higher education sector. Academically linked with the University of Limerick, we work in collaboration with UL and Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) as part of the Shannon Consortium to find new avenues for academic excellence, educational inclusion and innovation.

MIC is also committed to making a positive difference in our community, both local and regional, and to that end, we open up our campuses in Limerick City and Thurles, Co. Tipperary, to a variety of academic and leisure activities—often specifically aligned with the strategic aims and ethos of the College.

Mary Immaculate College plays a pivotal role in third level education in a diverse and inclusive Ireland. Here we strive to provide a vision and an environment where our students have both the freedom and the opportunity to achieve their full capabilities.

I often turn to the inspiring words of others to encourage our newly conferred students at Graduation. A quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln reads: “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” I hope our alumni can follow this maxim as they follow their own paths in life. Likewise, as Mary Immaculate College moves towards its 121st year, it aims to fulfil its own potential with continued growth and progress in the years ahead.

Important Facts

The Higher Education Authority (HEA) continues to review, in conjunction with the Department of Education & Skills, MIC’s request for funding to build a new library at the MIC Limerick Campus. The value of the project is estimated at €24.55m (Turner & Townsend) at November 2018 rates with the HEA advised that the College will contribute 10% to the overall project value. The HEA advises that the project is under active consideration and Minister of State for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD has acknowledged that the project is at an advanced stage of appraisal (November 2018).

Once confirmed the building of a new Library/Learning Resource Centre is likely to take two years and see the construction of a 5,000 sq m building at the heart of the main campus with approx. 675 formal and informal reading spaces provided within. Planning permission has been granted for the project. See a fly-through video with the Scott Tallon Walker Architects design to your right.

The most recent series of works carried out in MIC Limerick were as follows:

The Halla: A significant refurbishment of the interior of the Halla was completed over summer 2018, which has brought this multipurpose space up to a modern standard of design and appearance. The addition of ceiling to floor panels to cover the stage area will take place shortly.

TARA Building: There is an ongoing programme of health and safety works on the TARA building underway including adjustments to the exterior cladding and internal air distribution systems. The use of the building has not been affected.

Foundation Building: Work on the rear wall (internal and external) and roof has largely been completed, which dealt with an ingress of water to the building. Replacement of slates and guttering has taken place also.

Ranking / Awards

Mary Immaculate College celebrates the diverse achievements of students with a number of awards and bursaries throughout the year. In the words of Prof. Eugene Wall, President of MIC, at the 2017 College Awards: “Individually and collectively, all of the students, both current and graduated, whom we honour embody our College’s mission - ultimately to make the world a better place through our ideas, our innovations and our engagement”.

The variety of awards and bursaries on offer recognise the contributions of both undergraduate and postgraduate students at MIC, not just in the academic sphere but also in the world of sports, arts and culture and volunteerism.

MIC staff, the Students' Union, the MIC Foundation, partner colleges and outside bodies such as the Diocese of Limerick, the INTO and the GAA work together to support and administer these accolades to reward deserving recipients.
