Course opportunities
Graduates of the MDS develop proficiencies in broad data literacy and applied contexts, a critical understanding of data management and analytics technology and core capabilities for delivering and communicating data science projects. They have a mastery of the most current knowledge in data science, interpreting new knowledge critically and analytically, and have the skills to design, execute and evaluate their own research or projects with autonomy. They think strategically and logically, keep abreast of new data science developments and are able to deliver analytical models and data-driven systems.

Career Pathways
The Graduate Certificate in Data Science provides a pathway into the Master of Data Science for students who non-quantitative Bachelors degrees. The training it provides also supports several career paths, by: honing data skills at the frontier of machine intelligence research to become a data scientist for hire; upskilling to build intelligent data-driven systems in an existing area of expertise (e.g., mining analyst); improving scientific research through training in data management, analysis, and modelling.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission, an applicant is required to have:

an Australian bachelor's degree in a quantitative* discipline with a minimum 60 percent average or equivalent qualification or
an Australian bachelor’s degree with honours or equivalent qualification with a grade equivalent to an Australian credit average (65%) or better in a non-quantitative discipline. 
*A quantitative discipline includes data science, computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics, economics, finance or other disciplines that are deemed equivalent. As a guideline, the curriculum of a quantitative discipline should include some study of mathematics or statistics at the tertiary level.

Some background in computing is beneficial. For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution and qualification. Any grade requirements listed are based on the University of Sydney grading system .

TOEFL - IBT score - A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing

IELTS score - A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band

TOEFL - PBT score - A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing

Pearsons Test of English - A minimum result of 61 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
