Autism and Behavioural Science Graduate Certificate

Are you passionate about helping individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to achieve their potential and gain greater independence?

As a behavioural technician or therapist you will have expertise in the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis and the skills to work with individuals with ASD in therapeutic and school-based settings.

The campus is home to the NC Teaching Hair Salon, the Walker Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Centre, NC Research and Innovation, a new Green Automotive Technology lab and the Rankin Technology Centre. The Applied Health Institute, which specializes in allied health programs, operates a functioning Dental Clinic offering services to the community while teaching students. Also inside the main building you will find the Athletic Centre, home of Athletics and Recreation and the NC Knights intercollegiate sports program.

Job Opportunity Potential

All candidates selected for an interview must present evidence of education credentials to support the requirements of the position they are applying to. Niagara College requires original certificates, diplomas, degrees or transcripts to be presented at the time of interview.

Educational credentials within Canada must be granted from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Candidates with non-Canadian credentials must provide a World Education Services (WES) evaluation confirming the Canadian equivalency of the credentials. Non-Canadian credentials must be at an accredited, recognized post-secondary institution and must be deemed to be equivalent to a certificate, diploma or degree at a recognized post-secondary institution in Ontario.

Candidates who have non-Canadian credentials who have not yet been assessed as indicated above are expected to make application to WES. Offers of employment require a completed evaluation from WES.

If your program was less than 8 months

  •    You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.

If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.

For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.

If your program was 2 years or more

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

If you completed more than 1 program

  •    You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed -

  • must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • Ontario College Diploma (or equivalent) in Child and Youth Care (Worker), Communication Disorders Assistant, Developmental Services Worker, Early Childhood Education, Educational Assistant, Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant, Social Service Worker or Therapeutic Recreation OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioural Science, Child Studies, Education, Psychology, Speech and Language Sciences, Social Work or Sociology OR
  • For applicants who have studied outside of these fields of study, please submit a one-page cover letter indicating why you feel you would be successful in the ABS program, what experience you have already, and a résumé that includes your educational and work background with a current e-mail address AND
  • Proof of English proficiency

Program Requirements

Criminal Record Check

  • A Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (CRC-VSS) which is less than 6 months old is required before the start of the program.
  • Students with criminal charges for convictions will be significantly limited in placement, clinical, and/or employment opportunities in this field. The decision of whether a student with criminal charges or convictions is eligible to secure a field placement ultimately lies with the field placement agency.
  • Field placements must be completed in order to graduate.

Communicable Disease Surveillance

  • The confidential Communicable Disease Surveillance (CDS) Form must be completed and submitted to Student Health Services prior to the start of the program.
  • This process may take up to 10 weeks or more and requires a visit to your personal physician and/or a Public Health Department.

First Aid and CPR

  • Current Standard First Aid certification and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C certification is recommended before the start of the program.

Physical Fitness

  • Students applying to this program should recognize the physical demands involved in caring for children and may be required to lift up to 22.7 kilograms (50 pounds).
  • Additionally, some Boards of Education have instituted a fit for field test.
