Commercial Beekeeping - Graduate Certificate

Do you dream of working outdoors while contributing to the sustainability of one of the most important parts of our natural food system – the pollinator?

As a Commercial Beekeeper, you help meet the expected demand for pollination services by various agricultural crops in Canada and around the world.

  • Reflects Niagara College’s holistic approach to agri-food and commitment to helping meet the global demand for thousands of commercial beekeepers over the next decade including the need for over 3,000 commercial beekeepers across Canada by 2023.
  • Eastern Canada’s first-ever Commercial Beekeeping program.
  • Applied learning experiences via an on-campus apiary with 30 actively managed hives.
  • Three-semester program coincides with the normal annual lifecycle of a honey bee.
  • Reflective of a provincial focus on pollinator health strategies with an aim to create a highly skilled labour force to care for managed pollinators as wild pollinators continue to decline globally.
  • Engaged Program Advisory Committee with representatives from sectors involved in the planning, implementation, regulation and promotion of ecological restoration activities.

Campus Information

Niagara on the lake campus

This 125-acre campus features ecological lagoons, wetland systems, landscaped gardens and a 40-acre on-campus teaching vineyard. Students and visitors are also offered unique experiences at our on-campus enterprises; The NC Teaching Brewery, Winery, Distillery, NC Teaching Greenhouse and NC Teaching Spa, and Benchmark–a student-led restaurant that showcases food, wine and beer created and prepared by students.

Job Opportunity Potential

All candidates selected for an interview must present evidence of education credentials to support the requirements of the position they are applying to. Niagara College requires original certificates, diplomas, degrees or transcripts to be presented at the time of interview.

Educational credentials within Canada must be granted from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Candidates with non-Canadian credentials must provide a World Education Services (WES) evaluation confirming the Canadian equivalency of the credentials. Non-Canadian credentials must be at an accredited, recognized post-secondary institution and must be deemed to be equivalent to a certificate, diploma or degree at a recognized post-secondary institution in Ontario.

Candidates who have non-Canadian credentials who have not yet been assessed as indicated above are expected to make application to WES. Offers of employment require a completed evaluation from WES.

If your program was less than 8 months

  •    You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.

If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.

For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.

If your program was 2 years or more

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

If you completed more than 1 program

  •    You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed -

  • must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • Ontario College Diploma (or equivalent) or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university AND
  • Proof of English proficiency
