Master of Maori and Indigenous Leadership

This applied professional programme aims to equip the next generation of leaders across a wide variety of sectors with the skills, knowledge, and attributes necessary to advance the aspirations of Iwi Maori and other indigenous peoples, whether it be in a social, cultural, environmental, political, or commercial context.

The University has a main campus of 76 hectares (190 acres) at Ilam, a suburb of Christchurch about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the centre of the city.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates of this qualification will be in an ideal position to enhance the leadership capability in organizations working with Maori, including Iwi, Maori, government, community, and private sector organizations.

The graduating cohort will be expected to critically engage with and advance Maori aspirations in their strategic leadership careers. They will show the skills and attributes needed to lead and implement change in Maori and indigenous contexts.

PSW Opportunity

  • During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
  • After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
  • After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Academic entry requirements

The Master of M?ori and Indigenous Leadership (MMIL) is open to:

  • graduates of any bachelor's degree with at least a B Grade Point Average in 60 points at 300-level, and who have at least three years of professional experience in the M?ori sector; or
  • applicants without an undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification), but have qualified for the Postgraduate Certificate in M?ori and Indigenous Leadership.
