Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL) is a one-year professional qualification aimed at producing skilful English language educators for a wide variety of educational settings in the 21st century, from early childhood through to tertiary level. With its future focus, this Master's programme will give students the skills, knowledge, and capabilities to be adaptable in the face of future English language developments, as well as technological and pedagogical advances.
This programme is ideal for:
- New Zealand English language educators, or those who wish to specialise in English language education to emergent bilingual speakers of other languages in Aotearoa New Zealand
- graduates of Aotearoa New Zealand universities who may currently teach or plan to teach English in other countries
- teachers of English throughout the world who want or need to develop their language teaching.
- This programme is available to study by distance, with teaching and learning conducted online. See also the Master of Computer-Assisted Language Learning.

Note: graduates do not become qualified Aotearoa New Zealand teachers through this programme, however it is suitable professional development for Aotearoa New Zealand teachers.

PSW Opportunity
- During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
- After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
- After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Academic entry requirements
Students wishing to enrol in the MTESOL must have qualified for a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent degree (a B Grade Point Average in 300-level courses is normally expected). Relevant work experience will also be considered.
All students will need to be approved by the Dean of Education and Health Sciences.
