The Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (GradDipTchgLn) gives you the opportunity to gain knowledge of teaching, learners and curriculum, engage in professional practice in schools, and become part of the teaching profession in Aotearoa New Zealand. UC Primary Teacher Education graduates have gained teaching, leadership, and management positions in primary, intermediate, middle, and area schools across Aotearoa New Zealand. Graduates enjoy varied and rewarding careers as primary teachers, teaching across all eight curriculum learning areas. Many have opportunities to take on extracurricular activities, such as coaching sports teams; being involved in school productions and events; and sharing their areas of interest during electives or lunchtime/after school clubs.

UC Secondary Teacher Education graduates have gained teaching and leadership positions in secondary, senior, middle, and area schools across Aotearoa New Zealand. They enjoy rewarding careers as secondary school teachers, teaching in subject-based and integrated curriculum contexts, and many take on extracurricular responsibilities within schools eg, managing sports teams, organising cultural exchanges or drama productions, mediation services, etc. You may become curriculum or department leaders, leaders in pastoral care and wellbeing of learners, and even enter school management.

Transferable skills from the programme also apply to roles outside of teaching eg, educational publishing, policy, advocacy, consultancy, community development and leadership, social work, and the police.

PSW Opportunity

  • During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
  • After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
  • After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.

The academic entry requirements for admission to this qualification are:

Students must either have:

  • 1. a qualification equivalent to a New Zealand university bachelor degree, or
  • 2. been admitted with Academic Equivalent Standing as entitled to enroll for a Graduate Diploma

An overall average of 75% with a minimum of 60% in English in All-India Senior School Certificate or the Indian School Certificate; or an overall average of 80% with a
minimum of 65% in English from one of the following three Indian State Board Year 12 qualifications:

  • Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC);
  • Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Higher (Secondary) School Certificate;
  • Karnataka Pre-University Certificate; or one year of successful study towards an undergraduate degree at a recognized university in India

One year of successful study (B average / First Class / First Division) towards an undergraduate degree at a recognized university in India with a current NAAC accreditation of B or better;

  • Completed a degree at a recognized university with a current NAAC accreditation of C or better.
