Diploma of Nursing

Gain the essential skills and knowledge to work as an enrolled nurse in a variety of healthcare settings with our nursing course. In this rewarding career, enrolled nurses care for patients under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse.

During this health course, you'll learn how to implement general nursing care, assess client's health and analyse health-related information. You’ll also learn how to administer and monitor medications and attend to the needs of a range of healthcare clients, including older clients, acute care clients and people with mental health conditions. The course will assist you to develop effective communication skills and understand how to work within legal and ethical parameters in nursing.

You will complete a minimum of 400 hours of mandatory clinical placement in a range of healthcare settings across metropolitan, regional and rural areas.

Please note, if you choose to study at CAE City Campus you will be required to attend some practical sessions at Box Hill Institute's Elgar Road campus in Box Hill.

Located 14 kilometres east of Melbourne City, this campus has two locations, each named after the roads they are on – Elgar and Nelson.

City Campus

Our City Campus is co-located with the Centre for Adult Education in the heart of Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD).

Lilydale Lakeside

Our new higher education facility is based in Lilydale, with strong ties to industry and employers. Also located at the campus is the Yarra Ranges Tech School and Lilydale Library.

Lilydale Campus - John St

The Box Hill Institute John St building is part of the Lilydale Lakeside campus. It’s where we teach our trades courses in Lilydale and also where the Adult Migrant English Program is delivered.

Bankstown Campus

Bankstown Airport is located approximately 26 km from the Sydney CBD and has three runways, a small passenger terminal and a business park. It also has its own dedicated air traffic control tower and operates 24 hours a day.

Box Hill

Box Hill Institute offers courses that are delivered through blended learning as a combination of on-campus (face-to-face) and online study. Courses delivered through blended learning involve attending remote classes run through a range of specific industry platforms and require you to work unsupervised on your coursework.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

International students must have completed Year 12 (including science and mathematics) or international equivalent.

You must:

  • demonstrate a high level of literacy and numeracy skills 
  • be able to provide below checks prior to the first clinical placment:
  • a current clear Working with Children Check
  • a current clear National Police Record Check (Australia and one from your home country)
  • an up-to-date immunisation/vaccination record (related to Health Care Worker Category A, i.e. Diphtheria/Tetanus; Poliomyelitis; Measles/Mumps/ Rubella; Varicella Zoster Virus (Chicken Pox); Hepatitis B; Mantoux Test, Flu vaccine
  • have basic computer skills
  • provide evidence of meeting at least one of the English language standards listed on English Language Requirements prior to enrolment

PLEASE NOTE: Box Hill Institute only accept enrolments from international students who are 18 years of age or above at the time of course commencement.

There is an estimated additional AUD $1,700 per annum required as a co-payment for clinical placements and access to online text books/skills. Some clinical placement facilities may also request for educational history and drivers licence or passport.

There is also an estimated out of pocket cost of $500 for a nursing kit, nursing student polo shirt and recommended hard copy text books.

English Language Requirements

International students must provide evidence of meeting at least one of the English language testing standards listed below prior to enrolment:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic module. We only accept test results:
  • you achieve a minimum overall score of 7 in each sitting, and
  • you achieve a minimum score of 7 in each component across the two sittings, and
  • no score in any component of the test is below 6.5
  • from one test sitting, or
  • a maximum of 2 test sittings in a 6-month period only if:

Occupational English Test (OET). We will only accept test results:

  • you are tested in all 4 components in each sitting, and
  • you achieve a minimum score of B in each component across the two sittings, and
  • no score in any component of the test is below C
  • from one test sitting, or
  • a maximum of 2 test sittings in a 6-month period only if:

Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic. We will only accept test results:

  • a minimum overall score of 65 is achieved in each sitting, and
  • you achieve a minimum score of 65 in each of the communicative skills across the 2 sittings, and
  • no score in any of the communicative skills is below 58
  • from one test sitting, or
  • a maximum of 2 test sittings in a 6-month period only if:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT. We will only accept test results:

  • a minimum total score of 94 is achieved in each sitting, and you achieve a minimum score of 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing and 23 for speaking across the 2 sittings, and

no score in any of the sections is below:

  • 20 for listening
  • 19 for reading
  • 24 for writing, and
  • 20 for speaking
