Master of Materials Technology

The Master of Materials Technology is a one- to two-year full-time degree which provides you with a comprehensive yet flexible study of the full range of materials, including ceramics, composites, metals and polymers. It also offers graduate education for professionals to broaden their knowledge in these areas. This degree covers a broad spectrum of materials science and engineering, emphasising the application of the basic sciences to the understanding of the structure, properties and processing of materials.

You will take compulsory courses in the fundamentals of materials processing and design, presentation skills for materials technology and materials industry management, as well as nine electives covering everything from process metallurgy and phase transformations to thermodynamics, kinetics and polymer science. You will also complete a component of experimental or design project work, and an original research project in an area of your choice.Recognition of Prior Learning in Materials subjects may be granted, reducing the program duration of the program to one or one and a half years.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

The entry requirement for the Masters of Materials Technology is one of the following:

  • A Bachelor degree with a minimum weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 in a cognate science or engineering discipline OR a WAM of 50-65 PLUS approximately five years professional experience in a relevant field such as in the materials processing or testing industry.
  • An Honours degree at a recognised university;
  • A Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in the Materials Sciences with a minimum WAM of 65;

Applicants with other relevant qualifications and experience will need to demonstrate that they have achieved the same knowledge and skills through their formal or informal learning. This may be evidenced by qualification certificates, records of assessment activities relating to course or program learning outcomes, examples of experience from the workplace, community, or other context demonstrating relevant skills, knowledge or competencies, membership of (or eligibility to join) professional organisations requiring the attainment of certain qualifications, or testimonials of skills, knowledge or competencies from workplace supervisors.

Relevant documentation should be attached to the application and will be considered by the Academic Coordinator for the Program.

Those applying for admission from a cognate field and/or with an Honours degree may receive RPL. Those entering from a non-cognate Bachelor or other degrees will only be eligible for credit where it is directly relevant to materials technology.
