Master of Science in Teaching in Subject Matter Education

Our Master of Science in Teaching (M.S.T) Subject Matter offers the unique opportunity to earn your master's degree while simultaneously pursuing a New Jersey teaching certificate. 

The M.S.T. program is offered as a full-time program only and is in hybrid format. The program can be completed in 12 months with 3 courses the first summer session and two academic semesters of full-time courses. Two full-time, semester-long clinical internship placements in public schools are also required. Throughout the program, our students are grouped together in a cohort.

The M.S.T. program has a limited enrollment of approximately 25 students per year. If you are completing your undergraduate studies at Rowan, you may be able to take up to two program courses using the senior privilege option. Please contact the program advisor with for more information about this option.

We highly recommend that you meet with the program advisor for a transcript review, to assure that you have taken all necessary pre-requisite courses for certification.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended (regardless of number of credits earned)
  • Current professional resume
  • Typewritten statement of professional objectives
    • Provide reasons for pursuing the program. Describe how you might use this program to advance your career (educational goals beyond the master's level, if applicable, are also relevant).
  • Two letters of recommendation
    • Letters of recommendation should be from professional administrators and include information which attests to applicant's ability to pursue a graduate degree
  • Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Submission of official test results demonstrating passing scores on the Core Academic Skills for Educators: Praxis Core Basic Skills Tests (Reading, Writing, Math)
  • Interview (Applicants will be contacted directly by the Faculty Admissions Committee to schedule the interview. The interview may be in person or via telephone.)
  • On-site writing sample (conducted during Interview)
