BACHELOR OF SCIENCE in Biology with a concentration in Medical Laboratory Science

  • Medical Laboratory Scientists are health-care professionals who collect and analyze body fluids, tissues, and other samples from patients, either in a hospital setting or a clinical laboratory.
  • This program is a concentration within our Biology major that includes six semesters of coursework at Ashland University and a fourth year at the Cleveland Clinic School of Medical Laboratory Science.
  • At the end of the program, students not only receive a Bachelor of Science degree but are eligible for licensure testing rather than waiting several years to gain the necessary experience.
  • Students apply for the fourth year at the Cleveland Clinic School.  Students are not guaranteed admission, but are given preference as members of a partner institution.  Partnerships with other programs are in development.
  • The job outlook for this career is 13% growth from 2016 to 2026 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is “faster than average”.  Median pay in 2018 was $52,330 per year.
  • Essentially all graduates from the Cleveland Clinic program are offered positions at that hospital.  As well, the degree and subsequent licensure are highly portable with job opportunities across the country.
  • This program is very flexible.  After three years students can choose to continue at Ashland University as a Biology major and enter a large diversity of bioscience related careers, including medical or physician assistant school, and graduate school.
