Education Assistants support students who may require additional support with behaviors, specialized needs, academics or ELL (English Language Learning). Graduates of Stenberg’s Education Assistant program are prepared to work in public and private schools, child care centres, community drop in centres and more.

Education Assistants assist elementary and secondary school teachers by supporting students who many require specialized needs instruction. Stenberg’s Education Assistant graduates are in high demand by school districts throughout British Columbia.

The program is offered in a classroom or online-based format, allowing you to choose the delivery method that best suits your learning style, lifestyle and schedule.

Please note that the job title “Education Assistant” is growing in use and is replacing “Special Education Assistant”. The title “Teacher Assistant” is being used less as time goes on.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • ?Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, or mature student status*
  • Completion of English 12 or equivalent
  • Passing Stenberg College’s Admission entrance examination and entrance interview
  • Successful completion of a short written essay
  • Passing Stenberg College math examination or equivalent*
  • Passing verbal test if English is a second language or equivalent*
  • Completion of a criminal record consent form under the Criminal Record Review Act

*Entrance requirements can be met with evidence of alternate assessments such as Challenge Exams, or acceptable standardized English equivalency tests as per the Stenberg College Language Proficiency chart. Evidence of Post-Secondary studies at an equivalent level where English was the first language is acceptable.

Prior to Education Assistant program admission, Program Advisors will outline practice education requirements. Upon enrolment, students will be informed of next steps and timelines. Non-compliance could result in program dismissal. Requirements for practice education placements include:

  • Acceptable criminal record review with vulnerable sector check by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General (or Provincial equivalent)
  • Letter of good health completed by a Physician
  • Additional site specific orientation/training may be required

Program Advisors will work with students to obtain the following:

  • Proof of 50 hours of volunteer or paid experience working with children (this requirement can be met while parenting own children)
  • Reference letter stating suitability to work with children
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have volunteer or paid experience working with children with specialized needs in a school or related settings

English Requirements: Applicants whose native language is not English and wish to study at Stenberg College in one of the diploma programs must demonstrate their proficiency in English by way of Academic IELTS or PTE with minimum scores in IELTS of 6.0 overall and a PTE score of 51.
