BSc (Hons) in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (add-on)

Student will appraise and strengthen their analytical and leadership skills and critical thinking.  It will facilitate the development of knowledge, skills and attributes which will support veterinary nurses in practice as their roles expand and evolve, thereby ensuring long-term competent practice.  The programme also provides an opportunity for newly qualified and experienced veterinary nurses to continue their education by obtaining a level 8 qualification.

The aim of this programme is to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills and attributes to pursue extended or advanced veterinary nursing roles, such as critical care, laboratory diagnostics, management and leadership, or to undertake research in the field.

The advanced analytical techniques module will better prepare the veterinary nurses for new, more advanced techniques in in-clinic analysis and will provide them with career options within the broader ‘science’ field including commercial veterinary testing.  The students will also have an elective choice between Shelter Medicine and Herd Health and Biosecurity, which will allow them to exercise a preference for further specialisation in either companion or production animal care.

The research methods and research project modules will provide students with the skills for evidence-based practice and prepare them for further study at postgraduate level.  Clinical governance and evidence-based medicine will complement the academic research modules by focusing on the appraisal of evidence and the evaluation of its application to the clinical care setting.   In the Emergency and Critical Care Nursing module the students obtain an embedded, professional recognised qualification, RECOVER CPR.

The leadership module will differentiate between effective leadership and management.  Students will appraise their own leadership style and practices and identify interventions to aid them in the provision of more effective leadership within a clinical care setting.
