Graduate Diploma in Urban Design

Gain an appreciation of the historical and theoretical dimensions of urbanism and design and extend your core skills in the design and formulation of urban projects. You will develop leadership and expertise with a strong emphasis on sustainability, quantification and implementation. The University of Sydney's Urban Design program recognises that urban designers work at the nexus of aesthetic, economic, political and technical fields, and prepares you for professional practice in this exciting, multifaceted and increasingly valuable field. The Urban Design program was one of the first in Australasia and has built an excellent reputation, producing skilled graduates who work around the world in design, management and teaching roles. It continues to develop leadership and expertise in urban design and urbanism, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, quantification and implementation. At its core are studio projects that address emerging design issues, and supporting units are available to cover essential morphological, ecological, cultural and other dimensions of urbanism. "At the Master level you may choose to complete the core Master of Urban Design course, or combine it with one of two available streams: urban design and planning or heritage studies. The Urban Design program at the University of Sydney is the only professional training program in Urban Design to offer you enriched specialisations, giving you additional training and expanding the scope of your employment opportunities. The Urban Design program is available as a Master degree (1.5 years), a Diploma (1 year) and a Graduate Certificate (6 months).

Career Pathways
The course will prepare graduates for a career as an urban designer. Urban designers take into consideration a project's purpose, size and geographic data in their design recommendations. Working with private companies or public agencies, urban designers may be responsible for surveying land for a new housing complex, expanding a medical facility or developing a subway system. Urban designers may also participate in educating civic leaders and the public about the details of the projects scheduled for their communities.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Urban Design requires an undergraduate degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, town planning, urbanism, geography or a related field or completion of the requirements of the embedded Graduate Certificate with a WAM of at least 65. Based on the applicant's undergraduate performance, the Program Director reserves the right to require a portfolio of work indicating relevant design interests and capabilities for admission to the Graduate Diploma in Urban Design. A portfolio should only be provided if requested by the Program Director.

TOEFL - IBT score - A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 23 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 25 in Writing

IELTS score - A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 7.0 in each band

TOEFL - PBT score - A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing

Pearsons Test of English - A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
