Master of Urbanism (Heritage Conservation)

The program introduces you to contemporary planning theories and debates while instilling professional expertise in key areas of heritage conservation and policy. As a highly trained graduate, you will be differentiated through your broad knowledge of urbanism and deep specialization in heritage to offer your expertise across a range of urban conservation issues.

The Heritage Conservation stream within the Master of Urbanism is a two-year postgraduate program that will allow you to choose core units designed to develop skills in the assessment, interpretation, management, formulation of policy, and documentation of culturally significant places, including buildings, sites, and cultural landscapes.

The Master of Urbanism, developed in consultation with Industry and the Planning Institute of Australia is a pathway to specialization as a professional urban planner, urban designer, heritage architect, or consultant. It has been developed to address the urgent need for specialists in the planning, development, and architectural industries who understand the complex interrelationships between the various aspects of environmental planning.

Course opportunities

  • Business internship for high-achieving students
  • High-achieving students have the option to undertake an assessable work placement in Australia or overseas, worth six credit points.

Places in these units will be offered on a competitive basis and are subject to availability.

Business dissertation for high-achieving students
Students who achieve a weighted average mark (WAM) of 80 percent or higher in at least eight units of study (48 credit points) may apply to complete a 24 credit point research module comprising a supervised research dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words. Access to the business dissertation units is subject to an interview and the availability of suitable supervisors.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • a bachelor's degree in design, human geography or related field from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification; or
  • completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate diploma.

English Language Requirements:

  • IELTS score A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
  • TOEFL - IBT score A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
  • Pearsons Test of English A minimum result of 61 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
