A critical, challenging, and supportive course that encourages individual responses to the contemporary photographic industry.

If you want a career in photography, this is the course for you. Through a range of projects, you’ll explore and evolve your vision and practice in photography. Through practical workshops, you will learn technical expertise and through feedback and group sessions you will critique and expand your visual language.

You’ll also study the theoretical side of photography, including its fascinating history and contemporary practices. Experimentation, creativity, and collaboration are encouraged and facilitated throughout the course.

The course has a clear industry focus that aims to develop your professional awareness. A key part of your Final Year is learning how to operate as a freelancer, interact with clients, and approach potential employers. This culminates in the presentation of your final portfolio to employers and public-facing graduate shows.

Work placement

There is an opportunity to undertake a work placement in Photography. Previous work placements include Jamie Oliver Better Food Foundation, Nickelodeon, BBC, Magnum, Bauer, IPC, Gallery Stock, and St James' Palace.

Study Abroad

This course offers you the opportunity to study abroad through the University's study abroad program. Study abroad opportunities are available worldwide and in Europe under the Erasmus+ Programme.

Campus Information

College Lane Campus

The main site of the university remains the College Lane campus, which houses the original Hatfield Technical College building. Notable among the buildings in this campus is the university's Learning Resource Centre, a combined library and computer centre. There is also a substantial collection of halls of residence and student houses, and the University of Hertfordshire Students' Union is headquartered at College Lane campus. The College Lane campus is also the location of Hertfordshire International College, which is part of the Navitas group, providing a direct pathway for international students to the University.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates are equipped to pursue a wide variety of careers including self employment as photographers in editorial, advertising, fashion, journalism, publishing; also in allied professions in multimedia, curatorial work, picture research and arts administration. Students might also go on to specialist postgraduate study.

On the Photography degree you are prepared for employment in a range of photographic professions which include commercial, client led practices such as advertising and editorial photography through to documentary photography and personally defined fine art photography, as well as related fields of employment such as production, picture editing, curating and gallery management

Many of our graduates work in freelance positions after their degree. Others go into areas of employment such as photo editing and retouching, or become CGI artists, photo librarians / archivists, producers, agents, art buyers, art directors, photographers’ assistants, lighting technicians, digital operators, studio managers, photography curators / writers / historians and more.

  • BCC - Requires Maths A level. Other A Levels may come from a selection of either Engineering or Technology, Science, Design, Computing, or Business related subjects. General studies/critical thinking not accepted.

Undergraduate (year 1)

  • Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 60-70% depending on points tariff required by the UH course. Some courses may require specific subjects
  • IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band for standard courses – some courses require higher
  • Standard XII English with 65% will also be accepted

Undergraduate (year 2/3)

  • Depending on qualifications and course - usually require 2/3 year Diploma post-Standard XII to be considered
