BA (Hons) Graphic Design

Our Graphic Design BA (Hons) program is driven by a desire to develop graduates that are ready for employment. The course is committed to teaching you how to generate brilliant concepts and the skills required to execute them beautifully. Briefs will allow students to explore the widest definitions of contemporary graphic design by encouraging them to explore their own interests, be experimental, and push the boundaries of the subject.

Projects will focus on creating typographic and image-based solutions including posters, books, websites, and films as well as packaging, identity and typeface design.

We have an enviable record of success. In recent years our students have won over 100 awards in all of the most prestigious national and international design competitions. These include at least one D&AD pencil every year since 2011; Designer of the Year at New Designers; countless other ISTD, YCN and agency competitions; and various runners-up/finalists’ places in other competitions such at the Penguin Random House Design Award.

Study abroad

The course has an internationally-focused curriculum, so the option of studying for another year in another country is a fantastic opportunity that many of our students take. There are opportunities to gain global perspectives, develop language skills, work overseas and build an international network or contacts. Where you choose to travel depends on your interests, ambitions and language skills, but you’ll be able to choose from over 100 international partner universities, each fully accredited for the quality of its courses and student support. The year is designed to help you become a confident, highly skilled design professional ready to work in a global environment.

Work placement

Work placements are actively encouraged, with a dedicated 'professional practice' module during Level 5 that prepares students for taking on internships and placements. Course tutors have numerous high-profile links with industry and we often place students within these prominent businesses, as well as drawing on others within London and our local region. Students can either conduct placements as part of a taught module, or during non-taught weeks, or by taking the Sandwich Year option. This allows students to undertake a year’s worth of professional experience between Levels 5 and 6 either in the UK or abroad.

Interview

Apply through UCAS and if you’ve got the grades and you’re a good fit, we’ll invite you along to a face-to-face interview. Leave your suit at home and come for an informal chat about why you’d love to take the course. We want to hear what kind of design really interests you and what you know about the industry.

You’ll also need to bring your portfolio – approximately six to ten pieces of work that show off your potential and represent the kind of design you love. Present them well and explain your design process and ideas. It really doesn’t matter if you’ve never studied graphic design before, as long as you can think of original and clever concepts.
