BA (Hons) Visual Effects for Film and Television (Sandwich year)

This degree is for anyone who wants to create the incredible digital visual effects we see on our screens, from weird and wonderful TV ads to Hollywood blockbusters. Using the latest technology, this course teaches you how to create and seamlessly integrate photo-real, computer-generated creatures, crowds, objects, and stunt doubles. You’ll also learn how to produce digital particle effects (such as fluid and fire), object dynamics, lighting, crowd simulation, and many other tricks and techniques. Often working in collaboration with film students and the best central London production houses, you’ll take part in some spectacular live projects and gain vital industry experience.

Work placement

A work placement can take place during Semester B at Level 2 or during the summer. Students may undertake a year-long placement between the second and final year. Work placements are an opportunity to improve employment prospects and develop new skills.

Campus Information

College Lane Campus

The main site of the university remains the College Lane campus, which houses the original Hatfield Technical College building. Notable among the buildings in this campus is the university's Learning Resource Centre, a combined library and computer centre. There is also a substantial collection of halls of residence and student houses, and the University of Hertfordshire Students' Union is headquartered at College Lane campus. The College Lane campus is also the location of Hertfordshire International College, which is part of the Navitas group, providing a direct pathway for international students to the University.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates will be capable of working in the growing and exciting area of computer animated visual effects. Seamless integration of effects into live action in feature film, TV and increasingly games includes the creation of photo real computer-generated assets, particle effects such as fluids, fire, physical recreation of object dynamics, crowds, creature animation and compositing, matt painting and camera matching.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

UCAS Points

  • 104

A Level

  • BCC - Requires Maths A level. Other A Levels may come from a selection of either Engineering or Technology, Science, Design, Computing, or Business related subjects. General studies/critical thinking not accepted.

BTEC

  • DMM -  Requires Extended Diploma in Engineering (DMM) to include Distinction in Further Maths

Undergraduate (year 1)

  • Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 60-70% depending on points tariff required by the UH course. Some courses may require specific subjects
  • IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band for standard courses – some courses require higher
  • Standard XII English with 65% will also be accepted

Undergraduate (year 2/3)

  • Depending on qualifications and course - usually require 2/3 year Diploma post-Standard XII to be considered
