English Language Short Courses
General English offers a flexible option for students who wish to study English but do not require a qualification. General English courses can be used for personal development; for example, to help you communicate better while you live in New Zealand or to help you get a better job. Students who choose to study General English can be at any level and will learn alongside NZCEL students.

Career planning and course advice is offered to prospective students and members of the public who are considering their future study and employment options. The Career Centre is located in the Information Centre ( J Block) which is situated at the front of the Taradale campus. To help you get started in understanding career opportunities an excellent resource is Career Services rapuara, this has extensive information relating to 700+ careers including entry requirements, personal profiles, market information plus tools to assist in identifying career opportunities that reflect your interests and skills.
PSW Opportunity
- During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
- After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
- After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Entry Criteria
Applicants will take an online placement test before starting the programme to determine English level and entry point.
Applicants must be over 18 years of age.
On arrival, students will have a further assessment to confirm their level of English in order for them to be placed in an appropriate class.
Entry with Credit
Recognition of Prior Learning in NZCEL achieved elsewhere.
