NZ Diploma in Screen Production

The New Zealand screen industry is looking for people who have a core working knowledge of each of the main areas in the industry. This course offers each student the hands on experience to gain that knowledge. From day one the students are operating the camera gear, working on each other’s productions and developing a well rounded professional work ethic essential for a successful career in screen.

During the diploma each student will research, write, edit and direct a commercial, a short film and a mini documentary all which will make up their individual E-portfolio.

The one year diploma gives the students a solid grounding which leads into a second year of screen production offered at EIT as part of the Bachelor of Creative Practice.

The programme has been designed to give students as much “hands on” experience with camera, sound and editing equipment as practical. We primarily use state of the art digital cameras for recording images then edit those images on non-linear digital editing systems, as used in the professional industry.

The staff maintain regular contact with the local and national screen industry as well as the broader Hawke’s Bay community and wherever possible invite guest lecturers from the screen industry to speak with the students. The Screen staff value their partnership with students and aim to provide a quality practical education in a supportive environment encouraging personal and professional development.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Admission to the NZDAD [Level 5] programme may be limited by the number of places available.

Academic Requirement

The academic entry requirement for the NZDAD [Level 5] is either:

  • University Entrance, as defined by the NZQA, OR
  • Evidence regarded as sufficient by the Head of School of the capability to undertake and complete the programme of study, OR
  • At the discretion of the Head of School, where the applicant is over 20 years of age and demonstrates the capability to undertake and complete the programme of study.

All applicants must also provide a hand-written letter of application and a portfolio of work that represents their level of achievement.

All applicants will be required to attend an interview (and may bring wh?nau support) and are encouraged to bring a workbook showing drawing and design process to the interview. The purpose of the interview is to confirm the authenticity of the applicant’s portfolio of work and to assess the portfolio of work and the applicant’s suitability for the programme. The interview will determine whether an applicant is offered a place on the programme and at what level of the programme the applicant is offered a place (see Level Placement below). Thus, meeting the academic entry requirement is not on its own sufficient to ensure admission to the programme.

The interviews will be conducted by two IDEAschool academic staff and in the case of cross credit or Level placement by the Programme Coordinator and a staff member.

Level Placement Through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning is the mechanism by which the programme ensures that students are placed at an appropriate level. On the basis of evidence provided at an interview and the presentation of an application portfolio, applicants may be granted RPL and be placed in Levels 6, or 7 of the programme. Applicants may be awarded credit for whole levels of the programme in this way.

English Language Entry Requirement

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme.

For international applicants, ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include the following:

  • Successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (subject to the conditions in EIT’s Database for English Language Proficiency (DELP)).
  • Completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4 with any endorsement).
  • IELTS Academic score of 6, with no band score lower than 5.5, achieved in a single test within the two years preceding enrolment.
  • Accepted international equivalents to the above IELTS scores, achieved in a single test within the two years preceding enrolment (see equivalency tables in the DELP).
