NZ Diploma in Music

This 34-week project based programme studies popular music with an emphasis on advanced performance practice, composition and audio engineering. The practical component will be underpinned by a sound theoretical knowledge of contemporary music.

The NZ Diploma in Music [Level 5] is a one year programme that will develop your practical skills during individual and group projects to prepare you for a diverse and exciting career.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Incorporating Ableton Live and other software into performance
  • Advanced performance and recording methods specific to your instrument
  • Multi-tracking and Live recording in a professional studio environment
  • Audio engineering and editing in ProTools and other software
  • Writing and arranging music for small to large bands
  • Finding out which funding bodies apply to you and creating usable grant/scholarship applications
  • The ins and outs of writing music professionally
  • Utilising social media and other online platforms to boost your professional profile and market your events
  • Collaboration with the Screen Production, Fashion and Visual Arts students

Career planning and course advice is offered to prospective students and members of the public who are considering their future study and employment options. The Career Centre is located in the Information Centre ( J Block) which is situated at the front of the Taradale campus. PSW Opportunity

  • During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
  • After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
  • After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Selection process

Applicants must be able to play a musical instrument and/or sing confidently and competently in front of others.  A short written questionnaire will determine computer literacy at the time of the audition.

Standard entry

Applicants must attend an audition interview. Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate musical ability and have NCEA Level 2 or equivalent, or a work history indicating reliability and motivation. Applicants should have studied music or have performance experience. Strictly limited places.

Non-standard entry

If you are over 20 and do not meet the criteria above, you may still apply but your acceptance on the programme will be at the discretion of the Programme Coordinator, who will be looking at evidence of ability to succeed, e.g. maturity, life and work experience, succeed in other study.

Applicants

Please complete your enrolment form and a witnessed copy of your Passport or Birth Certificate (i.e. photocopies must be signed by a JP or an EIT Faculty/Registry administration staff member stating that the original Certified Birth Certificate / Passport has been sighted).

English language entry requirements

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English Language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. English Language fluency can be verified by achievement of one of the following within the last two years:

  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 4 (Any endorsement)
  • IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0
  • PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
  • International equivalents to IELTS accepted by NZQA or successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply)
