Bachelor's Degree in Communication Arts - Broadcasting
As a Communication Major, you will be equipped with a broad base of knowledge as well as hands-on training in a wide variety of communication fields, preparing you for many career paths after you graduate. We provide a well-rounded education for an increasingly diverse communication and media landscape. Every Communication Major will take a core of classes in Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, and Basic Journalism, as well as selecting a series of theory classes in things like Mass Communication, Public Relations, Persuasion, Organizational Communication, or Acting. Then students will choose a specialization in at least one of the following emphases: Broadcasting, Public Relations, Journalism, Speech Communication, and/or Theatre. Within the Broadcasting program, there’s a lot of hands on work involved in this field with our TV and Radio stations. You will get to host live shows as well as create your own content. You will not only experience station work but field work as well. You will be going out and capturing images and video as well as interviewing a variety of people from students to faculty to business owners. Our stations are run by the students, for the students, putting out new content all the time. In Radio, you will gain first-hand experience working in a live radio station, our station WVCU 97.7 FM. The training with the station requires using computer software such as Adobe Audition where you can manipulate audio in order to produce content. You will also be responsible for having your own show once a week. During your show, you will run the sound board, host guests, fill out the station log, and talk live to listeners. WVCU is FCC licensed so we are on air 24/7, every day.
