Safety, Health and Environmental Management MSc with advanced practice in second year

Are you interested in managing the vital issues of safety, health and environmental sustainability? There’s an increasing need for professionals who can help organisations comply with regulations, undertake environmental impact assessments, identify risks and demonstrate due diligence.

Throughout this Masters course you’ll study key concepts such as risk and sustainability. You’ll also gain the knowledge and skills to be able to make independent professional judgements and contribute effectively to organisational strategies.

The course is accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), which means that after completing the course you will meet the academic requirements for Graduate (Grad IOSH) membership.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Accredited by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) for the purpose of eligibility to apply for associate membership.

Internship:
This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time to gain all-important work experience and employability skills. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will try to help those who prefer this option to source opportunities and to prepare their CV, but ultimately it is the student's responsibility to secure an internship position through a competitive application process.

Research:
If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Geography and Environmental Studies Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad:
We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

People join from this Masters course from many different backgrounds. You might, for example, have been an undergraduate student in geography, science, engineering, business, law or environmental health.

IEMA is the professional body for everyone working in environment and sustainability. This course entitles students to FREE student membership for the duration of the course and on successful completion you qualify for GradIEMA. Graduate membership is a launchpad for future leaders within environment and sustainability and offers a range of benefits to support you throughout your career. You can then “Fast track” to Practitioner Membership (PIEMA) following successful completion of the work-based assessment of competence.
