Choosing English Literature with Film Studies at Surrey means you’ll examine the most vital and influential works of literature from the medieval period to the present day, and film from a range of national traditions and in a number of genres.

What you will study
Studying literature and film encourages you to become a reflective, sensitive and active reader and viewer. You will think carefully about literary texts and films, about what it means to interpret written and cinematic works, and the importance of literature and cinema in history and society.

You’ll acquire extensive knowledge of literary texts and discourses, learning the critical skills to analyze these works and developing the cultural vocabulary to communicate your ideas about them.

You’ll be introduced to a range of thought-provoking critical and theoretical approaches to literature and film. You’ll also discover historical, social and psychological perspectives which will enhance your understanding of literary works and cinema, allowing you to place them in their proper historical, international and cultural contexts.
