Master of Chemistry (Leuven)

Master of Chemistry (Leuven)

This programme provides profound chemical knowledge and a thorough training in current chemical research. You will learn to deepen and apply your chemical knowledge to solve the interdisciplinary problems of the future, both in industrial or academic setting. The programme is anchored in the strong research environment of the Chemistry Department and offers you the opportunity to pursue an internship in a research institute or in industry.

What is the Master of Chemistry all about?

The overall aim of the Master of Chemistry programme is to train students to conduct research in an academic or industrial setting.

Students apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired by identifying a research question, situating it in its proper chemical and social context and designing a study that addresses this research question.

Structure

The full programme comprises 120 ECTS credits, including 18 ECTS for compulsory courses and 42 ECTS for electives. In addition you develop practical skills in an external internship (in industry or a research institute) (30 ECTS), while the remaining 30 ECTS are allocated to the master's.

There are three tracks to choose from:

  • Theoretical and Structural Chemistry
  • Sustainable Chemistry
  • Nanostructured Materials

Department

The Department of Chemistry aims to develop and maintain leading, internationally renowned research programmes dedicated to solving fundamental and applied problems in the fields of:

  • the design, synthesis and characterisation of new compounds (organic-inorganic, polymers) for medicinal and material applications
  • sustainable synthetic chemistry and hydrometallurgy
  • the simulation of the properties and reactivity of (bio)molecules, polymers and clusters by quantum chemical and molecular modelling methods
  • the determination of the chemical and physical properties of (bio)molecules, and polymers on the molecular as well as on the material level by spectroscopy, microscopy and other characterisation tools as related to their structure.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

CREDENTIALS REGARDING PRIOR EDUCATION For applicants from outside Belgium, comparability of the diploma is not always easily established. Therefore we ask you to upload the following documents with your application: * Scans of transcripts and diplomas are required for all applicants. These documents are sufficient for all applicants from universities that have an exchange agreement with the Faculty of Science of KU Leuven or universities that are in the global top 200 in the most recent Times Higher Education or QS rankings. Additional documentation is required for applicants from other universities as it is impossible for us to reliably assess the comparability. In those cases the admission board will take a positive decision only if supporting information is provided: * a complete list of course titles for which you have obtained a credit should be part of this. Indicate the course size (in ECTS-credits) and the result you obtained, preferably according to the ECTS-scale; if a different scale is used, please provide an summary explanation on the meaning of the scores. * for the courses that you deem most relevant as a preparation for the master that you are considering, provide a short (about one half to one page) description according to the standard guidelines for an ECTS-study guide. The Admissions Board evaluates all applications and has the final say on the admissibility of the student, taking into account the relevant information.
