What is the Master of Biomedical Sciences all about?

Biomedical sciences underwent a spectacular evolution during the past decades. New diseases such as bird flu arose, whereas others such as AIDS and diabetes have spread on a larger scale. At the same time, researchers are discovering new ways to fight these diseases. The human genome has been decoded, gene technology is steadily growing, immunotherapy has been introduced for the treatment of several cancers and the first steps in the direction of stem cell therapy have been made. The laboratories at KU Leuven and University Hospital Gasthuisberg deliver cutting edge work in the field of disease management and prevention and the development of new therapies, stretching from bench to bedside. The Master of Biomedical Sciences at KU Leuven allows students to live the journey, hands on.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for admission to the Master of Biomedical Sciences at the KU Leuven, you must: - Have a relevant bachelor's degree (for example Biomedical Sciences, Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences, Life Sciences.) - This implies a bachelor's degree obtained at a high level university with sufficient education in the following subjects: Molecular Cellular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Anatomy, Pathology, Physiology, Microbiology, Neurosciences, Epidemiology and Statistics. Practical training is also required. Insufficient education in a number of the aforementioned subjects may be compensated by sufficient previous education in other subjects relevant for a Biomedical Science education (e.g. Biochemistry, Pharmacology). - Be proficient in English - Pass the administrative screening by the KU Leuven International Office. All applicants will be evaluated by the admission committee. Selection Criteria 1) Credentials regarding prior education In order to gauge whether the expected entry level matches your curriculum, we require that you submit a complete transcript of your academic records. - Certified copies of transcripts and diplomas are required for all applicants. - A complete list of course titles for which you have obtained a credit should be part of this. Indicate also the course size (if possible in ECTS-credits). - Also indicate the results you obtained, preferably according to the ECTS-scale; if a different scale is used, please provide a summary explanation on the meaning of the scores. - For the courses that you deem most relevant as a preparation for the Master of Biomedical Sciences, provide a short (about one half to one page) description according to the standard guidelines for an ECTS-study guide. 2) Proficiency in English All applicants must provide proof of proficiency in English. To do so, you are required to take one of the following English language tests: - IELTS, Academic module. Overall score min. 7.0 and on each individual topic (listening, reading, writing and speaking) min. score 6.5. - TOEFL, Internet based test. Overall score min. 100 pt. and on each individual topic (listening, reading, writing and speaking) min. 20 pt. 3) A motivational letter In which you explain why you think to have the right profile for this master study and how you think will benefit from this study. 4) Two recommendation letters 5) CV 6) Additional information (by mail or phone conference) can be requested by the committee before reaching a decision.
