MSci in Animal Behaviour

The four-year MSci Animal Behaviour programme mirrors the BSc Animal Behaviour programme during the first three years, but also includes an additional fourth year during which you will undertake two projects. Each of these will focus on a specialised area aligned with one of our leading research groups, and it is expected that one will be carried out in partnership with an external organisation. The remainder of your time will be spent on a two-week intensive field course in which your scientific field research, debating, and presentation skills will be further developed.

Animal behaviourists aim to understand natural behaviours; how they vary among individuals, species and species groups; how current and past environments and ecology influence behaviour; and the underlying gene-environment interactions that result in various behaviours. The programme highlights the value of studying animals in their natural habitats, utilising the expertise of staff members who run long-term studies of iconic species in the wild. This approach is underpinned by field courses in the second and third years.

Campus Information

Penryn Campus

Our Penryn Campus is consistently ranked highly for satisfaction: students report having a highly personal experience that is intellectually stretching but great fun, providing plenty of opportunities to quickly get to know everyone. Currently supporting around 6,000 students, the campus – shared with Falmouth University – combines the latest academic research and residential facilities with an intimacy, energy and friendliness. The diversity of students’ interests and backgrounds gives the campus a unique vibrancy. Though we have one of the UK’s smallest TEF Gold university campuses, we excel in tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges through our research, which informs our teaching. Students respond positively to how we do this; they report exceptionally high levels of satisfaction with academic staff, improved communication skills and confidence. Issues related to the environment and sustainability underpin much of the campus’s ethos; these themes recur throughout our degree programmes as well as in student societies, clubs and the running of the campus. The campus is constantly developing, most recently the £12 million extension to the existing Science and Engineering Research Support Facility (SERSF), which builds upon the £30 million investment in the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI). Cumulatively, these facilities put not only the University, but also Cornwall as a whole, at the forefront of research aiming to solve problems associated with environmental change. Other recent additions include the Renewable Energy Engineering Facility (REEF) and a £1.2 million Masters Suite. A £4 million sports centre and nursery, and a prestigious Green Flag Award for our grounds, help make this campus a great place to study, work and live.

  • Degree Apprenticeships offer an innovative and cost-effective way of attracting, training and retaining high-calibre employees and graduates to your business. We work in collaboration with employers to shape customised programmes that meet specific business needs. As such, your needs are addressed as part of the co-design of the Degree Apprenticeships programmes we offer.
  • Apart from providing you with money, a part-time job can provide you with experience to add to your CV. You will develop skills such as time-keeping, learning how to deal with colleagues, working as part of a team, problem solving and commercial awareness. Part-time work could provide experience in a field that you want a career in, helping convince employers you are serious about that career path.
  • The Career Mentor Scheme is a popular employability scheme which matches students at any stage of their studies, or recent graduates (up to three years post-graduation) with an experienced professional, for sector insight and one-to-one careers advice and guidance, over a 6 month period.
  • Many of our degrees include a work experience module as an integral part of the programme. For those that don’t, you can opt to do one of the generic independent work experience modules. Through either paid or voluntary work placements, the module will help you develop essential transferable skills for your future employability.
  • Structured placements and internships will help you to develop business acumen and may also help you develop specific skills that will be useful in your chosen career. The Career Zone runs a range of schemes to help University of Exeter students and graduates find valuable internships and placement opportunities.
