MSc by Research Agriculture, Ecology and Environment

This MSc by Research in Agriculture, Ecology and Environment provides an integrated understanding of ecology and environmental science with social and economic considerations in agricultural systems.
Learn from researchers from the Centre for Agri-Environmental Research (CAER), one of the leading centres for agroecology research worldwide, as you develop a multidisciplinary appreciation of the underlying environmental, social and economic issues surrounding contemporary agricultural systems.
You will gain experience in research methods and statistical analyses commonly used in agriculture, ecology and environmental science, as well as plan, manage and conduct an in-depth field and/or lab-based independent research project. Class sizes vary by subject and module, but emphasis is always placed on good contact time with lecturers. Learning occurs across a variety of lectures, seminars, tutorials and field trips.
You will participate in a one-week field trip visiting a range of different organisations in the sector, giving you a broad exposure to future potential employers and potential job roles. We also hope to be able to offer placements at a variety of locally situated organisations for students to be able to conduct their research projects.
You will have access to the University’s Crops Research Unit at Sonning Farm, which has facilities to support field plot experiments on all temperate arable and forage crops within a dedicated 12 ha, irrigable field site and supporting laboratory and teaching facilities.
Access is also granted to the University’s Crop and Environment Laboratory (CEL), comprising of 2500 m2 of heated glasshouses, with climate controlled and factorial houses, controlled environment growth cabinets, and a protected field plot experimental area.
You will have access to the University’s internet, printing and scanning facilities, and a full range of statistical and econometric software. Excellent opportunities exist for research, networking and personal development within each programme, as well as access to first-class study resources and employability support.
On joining this course, you will become a member of the School's Graduate Institute of International Development, Agriculture and Economics (GIIDAE). As a GIIDAE student, you will have the option of undertaking a placement during the summer period, however this is not a requirement of the degree.
