BA (Hons) Primary Education with Mathematics with QTS
Our three-year course supports you to consider questions such as these, along with many others. We prepare you teach the wider primary school curriculum, as well as developing the specialist mathematics knowledge you’ll need to teach primary aged school children. You'll understand how children learn key concepts within mathematics, the barriers they may face and how you can nurture and develop this understanding.
You’ll study English, mathematics, science and computing in children’s education as well as developing your knowledge to teach a broad and balanced curriculum of foundation subjects alongside this. Some of the practical skills you’ll learn include creative ways to teach reading, writing and expressive arts, how to plan lessons, and how to write learning plans for your class.
As you progress you'll have the opportunity to focus more on discrete mathematics units, exploring innovative ways to teach mathematics, as well as improving your subject knowledge. These units help to prepare you to lead mathematics education in your school and support your colleagues in teaching mathematics in your future teaching career.
Placements are a very important part of this course. On your placements, some of your day-to-day tasks might be teaching English, mathematics and foundation subjects (such as history and art), supporting children in the playground, and liaising with both parents and teaching professionals such as speech and language therapists who work with the children in your class.
