Bachelor of Early Childhood Education
Develop the knowledge and skills you need to be an effective early childhood teacher and leader with our early childhood education course. In our course, you'll learn how to demonstrate an exemplary standard of teaching, and how to be adaptable and highly proficient in critical and future thinking with a sound grasp of early childhood teaching and pedagogy.
Our early childhood education course is ideal for teachers who aspire to meet the needs of contemporary early childhood services. You’ll study philosophies, principles and practices of early childhood teaching, and how teaching and learning in discipline areas of language and literacy, mathematics, arts, science, and health and well-being are integrated across early childhood education play-based programs.
Studying our early childhood education course will assist you in further developing your leadership and management skills to lead programs across a range of early childhood service types and allow you to gain an in-depth knowledge of exemplary practice in early childhood service provision in areas such as:
- child development
- early childhood pedagogy and play
- child and family-centred practice
- legal and regulatory compliance requirements
- provision of inclusive environments
- early childhood leadership
You'll gain skills in research methods, professional practice, project management, and professional communication. You will also be required to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching as an early childhood teacher after graduation, which will enable you to teach across a range of early childhood settings.
This course has national accreditation with the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and is recognised by the Victorian Institute of Teaching for Early Childhood Teacher registration on graduation.
Course Length
Full time: 4 years (without an approved Diploma) OR 3.5 years (entry with an approved Diploma in Early Childhood Education).

Located 14 kilometres east of Melbourne City, this campus has two locations, each named after the roads they are on – Elgar and Nelson.
Lilydale Lakeside
Our new higher education facility is based in Lilydale, with strong ties to industry and employers. Also located at the campus is the Yarra Ranges Tech School and Lilydale Library.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
All applicants must:
- supply evidence of English language proficiency
- have successfully attained at least a pass in a final year of secondary school mathematics unit OR successfully complete a tertiary entrance mathematics test (TEMT)
- successfully complete an individual face-to-face selection interview of approximately 30 minutes duration. The selection interview takes the place of the CASPer test, which is not required for entry into this course. The selection interview will be a verbal assessment of your aptitude for early childhood teaching through a series of questions which includes analysing a given scenario
- hold or be able to hold a current National Police Records Check and a Working with Children Check
- competent computer skills for accessing subject resources; completing online tutorial tasks; and submitting word processed assignments through StudentWeb
After submitting your application through the international office, you will be required to complete a selection interview. When the course manager receives notification of your application, you will then be contacted via email, to arrange for your selection interview. Your interview can be completed either via skype if you are overseas, or face-to-face if you are already in Australia.
PLEASE NOTE: Box Hill Institute only accept enrolments from international students who are 18 years of age or above at the time of course commencement.

- IELTS Academic 7.0 (Academic) with no band score less than 7.0
- TOEFL Print based 600, or TOEFL Computer based 250, or TOEFL Internet based 100 or
- Pearson Test of Academic English 69 (with no communicative skill score less than 65) or
- Cambridge English Advanced CAE (Results prior to 2015: 67, results from 2015 new scores:185-190), or approved equivalent
