Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

The following course-specific admission requirements (Band 6) are mandatory and must be satisfied by all applicants.

All applicants are required to have a bachelor's degree or master's degree in any field with a course weighted average mark of at least 60%, or equivalent as recognised by the University. Applicants are also required to have a tertiary level unit in human biology (students who do not meet this requirement will be required to undertake a Health Science Preparation program at ECU). Prospective applicants are required to submit a curriculum vitae and a personal statement as part of their application. Meeting the above requirements does not guarantee selection and in ranking applications prior academic performance and work experience may be considered.

Academic admission requirements (Band 6) may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • Bachelor degree; or
  • Equivalent prior learning including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English competency requirements may be satisfied through the completion of one of the following (Band 5):

In addition to satisfying ECU minimum English standard requirements for this course, all applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency as specified in the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s (NMBA) English language skills registration standard.

These requirements are as follows:

  • IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
  • Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
  • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
  • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test:
    • 24 for listening
    • 24 for reading,
    • 27 for writing, and
    • 23 for speaking, or
  • Completion of at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country as defined by the NMBA (including at least 2 years between years 7 and 12) with a supporting written declaration to confirm that your primary language is English,
    or
  • Completion of at least 5 years full-time equivalent continuous combined secondary and/or tertiary and/or vocational education taught and assessed in a recognised country as defined by the NMBA (within the last 7 years), with a supporting written declaration to confirm whether your primary language is English.  Note: The 5 years does not include the proposed ECU study. 

Note:  English tests must be completed within 2 years of the proposed course commencement date and additional requirements may apply in relation to acceptable number of test sittings and combined scores across test sittings.

Important course notes

Clinical or professional work placement requirement
Students will undertake a number of practicum units as a component of the program and undertake a total of 800 hours as per Professional Accreditation requirements. These are delivered in association with a range of clinical partners as full time clinical placements. Students are not permitted to undertake clinical placements on a part time basis therefore all students are required to attend their allocated placement for 40 hours per week.

Attendance requirements
Students are required to undertake a minimum 800 hours of full time clinical placements. In the practicum units students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of the workshops held within the demonstration wards. Practicum placement dates are outside of standard semester timetable to ensure that sufficient and appropriate placements can be procured for the course.

Clearances and/or Risk Management Protocols Required
To be eligible to undertake clinical practice and fulfil their duty of care, students are required to complete risk management protocols on commencement of the course and carry out amendments in subsequent semesters, as appropriate. Risk management protocols include, but are not restricted to: Certificate of National Police Clearance NB International students on limited visas are required to provide a certificate of International Police Clearance Department of Health (WA) Criminal Screening Current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) initial certification required plus annual renewal of certification, courses available via ECU provider Current Manual Handling Certification initial certification required plus annual renewal of certification, courses available via ECU provider Evidence of immunisation status as per the Department of Health schedule.

MRSA clearance if worked in, or been admitted to, a health facility outside of Western Australia in the 12 months prior to enrolment; Working with Children Check(Bluecard mandatory) .In accordance with Edith Cowan University, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Fitness to Practice Policy, all students are required to confirm their ability to meet the Inherent Requirements for Nursing & Midwifery prior to undertaking clinical placement. These statements identify the essential abilities, knowledge and skills needed to achieve the core learning outcomes of the nursing and midwifery courses that lead to professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and Australian Health Practitioner Registration Authority (APHRA).

Registration
Students will need to graduate to be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia is required to practice in the profession.

Graduates will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) as Registered Nurses.
