Music BA

The academic courses in our program introduce foundational skills through the history, theory, literature, performance, and cross-cultural study of music. Students often find that the skills emphasized in our music courses, such as critical thinking, listening, collaboration, and writing, are relevant to most disciplines and professions. As a result, the major and minor in music constitute excellent preparation for graduate study in music and related fields in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; for careers in performance, media, and culture industries; or for any occupation demanding clear and original thinking, command of the written word, analytical and listening skills, and creativity. Many of our courses take advantage of our location close to Pittsburgh, a vibrant city with great live performance and plenty of cultural opportunities.

In addition to a curriculum designed for majors and minors, we offer a wide range of innovative courses for the general student in historical musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music, music theory, composition, jazz, and music technology.

Recent and upcoming courses to look out for include:

Music in the Age of Romanticism
Introduction to Global Music Listening
The Art of Conducting
African Pop
Music Theory I, II, and III
Digital Audio Recording and Manipulation
Music in the Natural Environment
The History of Underground Dance Music
Opera: Sex, Love and Magic

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Admission Criteria
Washington & Jefferson College takes a holistic approach to evaluate applications for admission, weighing each of the individual components in the following order:

High School Performance
An applicant’s high school grade point average and class rank (if available) will be considered in the context of the rigor of their chosen curriculum and the Admission Committee will look for a minimum course distribution on a student’s transcript. If offered, the Admission Committee views strong performance in Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and College in High School courses favorably. Credit is typically awarded for AP scores of 4 or 5, IB (HL) exam scores of 5, and is considered for three or four credit college courses taken in high school.

Test Scores (optional)
Standardized test scores are only one factor in our admission process and serve to affirm a student’s academic potential in conjunction with their high school performance. Our middle 50% range is typically 1060-1260 on the SAT Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections and an ACT composite score of 24-30.

Students whose first language is not English must submit some form of testing to provide evidence of their English proficiency. TOEFL and IELTS are the preferred tests, though you may contact us about submitting another form of testing such as ELPT. These tests may be waived if you submit SAT scores with a critical reading score above 600. W&J does not have a minimum TOEFL score, but we typically look for a score of 580 or higher on the paper-based test, 233 or higher on the computer-based exam, or 85 on the iBT. For the IELTS we generally look for scores of 6.5 or higher out of 9. The ETS code for W&J is 2967.
