Theatre BA

The Theatre minor and emphasis within the Communication Arts major is designed to teach students about every aspect of theatrical performance, from those visible to the audience to those behind the scenes. Students gain aptitude in the writing, staging, performance, and analysis of theatrical productions, with special attention to relationships among artists, audiences, and communities.

Student theatre productions are staged each semester with students participating from across the College. These plays and musicals directed by communication arts professors are performed in Olin Fine Arts Center. We also produce and host events including Theatre Slam, 24-hour writing and performance event; Winter Tales, an evening of 10-minute one-act plays written by W&J students, faculty, staff and alumni; and student capstones are performed in the intimate Black Box Studio in Olin 102.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Admission Criteria
Washington & Jefferson College takes a holistic approach to evaluate applications for admission, weighing each of the individual components in the following order:

High School Performance
An applicant’s high school grade point average and class rank (if available) will be considered in the context of the rigor of their chosen curriculum and the Admission Committee will look for a minimum course distribution on a student’s transcript. If offered, the Admission Committee views strong performance in Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and College in High School courses favorably. Credit is typically awarded for AP scores of 4 or 5, IB (HL) exam scores of 5, and is considered for three or four credit college courses taken in high school.

Test Scores (optional)
Standardized test scores are only one factor in our admission process and serve to affirm a student’s academic potential in conjunction with their high school performance. Our middle 50% range is typically 1060-1260 on the SAT Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections and an ACT composite score of 24-30.

Students whose first language is not English must submit some form of testing to provide evidence of their English proficiency. TOEFL and IELTS are the preferred tests, though you may contact us about submitting another form of testing such as ELPT. These tests may be waived if you submit SAT scores with a critical reading score above 600. W&J does not have a minimum TOEFL score, but we typically look for a score of 580 or higher on the paper-based test, 233 or higher on the computer-based exam, or 85 on the iBT. For the IELTS we generally look for scores of 6.5 or higher out of 9. The ETS code for W&J is 2967.
