Air New Zealand Academy of Learning
Air New Zealand Academy of Learning training programs are designed with pursuit of excellence in mind. Our programs are developed by aviation experts who understand the aviation industry on a global scale. That's why all our learning delivery team are aviation industry professionals. Masters at their art who will also become your mentors. People who can pass on years of experience, and tell you what’s happening in the industry right now. It’s why we are not just a learning academy, but an active part of one of the world’s most innovative airlines – Air New Zealand. Giving you hands-on access to innovative real world experiences and state of the art facilities.
Becoming a Pilot
For students new to the industry
Air New Zealand does NOT provide ab initio pilot training to aspiring pilots. The Air New Zealand Academy of Learning has selected four flight training organisations (FTO's) across New Zealand to become preferred providers for aspiring pilots. We work with the preferred FTOs to ensure a future supply of airline pilots is available for the New Zealand aviation industry - including Air New Zealand. The preferred FTOs have been appointed following a rigorous selection process to validate their training programmes and quality systems, and to confirm their ability to deliver airline-styled selection criteria and training standards.
Preferred Flight Training Schools (FTOs)
IAANZ
Christchurch
Located at Christchurch International Airport in a stand-out, modern complex is the International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ), home to around 100 commercial pilot and flight instructor trainees per year.
With a fleet of 28 aircraft and one the most experienced instructing teams in Australasia, the IAANZ has long been the ‘trainer of choice’ for those pilots heading towards an airline career.
Massey University
Palmerston North
The School of Aviation was established in 1987 to meet airline needs for graduates with a wide industry perspective.
Programmes include the Bachelor of Aviation degree - focusing on the professional development of the student pilots- and academic programmes in aviation management to doctoral level.
The School operates two aircraft types; a fleet of 12 Diamond DA-40 single engine trainers, and 2 Diamond DA-42 Twin Engine Trainers.
Massey’s philosophy is that a pilot, educated to the highest university academic standards, and trained in accordance with industry best practices, is an ‘aviator with a difference’, and an asset to any airline.
Nelson Aviation College
Nelson and Motueka
Nelson Aviation College has been training pilots for the aviation industry since 1978. Consistently high pass rates for first time sittings and a maximum instructor to student ratio of 1:4 ensures safe, quality instruction throughout each phase of your training.
Our instructors are experienced, dedicated and friendly. We know all of our students on a first name basis so you will never feel like "just a number".
Nelson Aviation College delivers the Air New Zealand Airline Integration Course (AIC) at Nelson Airport, New Zealand

From pilots preparing for an airline career, mountain flying and instructor ratings through to private or commercial pilot licensing, Southern Wings is known for its ability to deliver superior quality pilots who are well equipped to deal with the changing demands of the aviation industry.
Committed to excellence the Southern Wings aviation training school is fully equipped with a well maintained fleet of fixed wing aircraft suitable for all training purposes. Simulators are also available in both the Invercargill and Auckland bases along with comfortable teaching facilities.
