Campus Information

North Terrace Campus

North Terrace is the earliest permanent home of the University. Development of the campus began when the South Australian Parliament granted five acres (2 hectares) to the University of Adelaide established in 1874. The Mitchell Building accommodated the entire University when it opened in 1882, although the University's academic life had begun in a city building six years earlier. The heritage-listed building features the restored foyer with its ornate pillars, elegant staircase, stained glass windows and vaulted cedar ceilings. Fine stonework is a feature of the Mitchell Building, a landmark building on North Terrace boulevard. The building is named after the philosopher Sir William Mitchell, who was Vice-Chancellor from 1916 to 1942, and Chancellor from 1942 to 1948. A statue of Sir Walter Watson Hughes, who with Sir Thomas Elder provided funds to establish the University, is located at the front of the building.

Roseworthy campus

With an internationally reputation for excellence in dryland agriculture, natural resource management and animal production, the campus is now the major centre for South Australia’s animal and veterinary science research. Roseworthy campus is located on a 1600 ha property 50 kilometres north of Adelaide and includes a working farm on which students gain practical experience and training.

Waite campus

Here, the Waite Research Precinct (The Waite) is a hive of complementary organisations and centres engaged in world-class research and development in plant biotechnology, cereal breeding, sustainable food and agriculture, wine, horticulture and natural resource sciences. Named in honour of Peter Waite, the Waite Agricultural Research Institute was established on the site in 1924 following the bequest of Urrbrae House and 300 acres from Mr Peter Waite to the University of Adelaide.

Melbourne campus

The University of Adelaide’s Melbourne campus is located just to the west of the city in Docklands. The free city circle tram stops at our front door.
