Master of Psychology (Clinical)

Become a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological and mental health conditions.

Based on an integrative approach to clinical psychology that emphasizes evidence-based practice, this course has been designed in consultation with industry partners. Interrelated steams of theory, research and practice provide the skills needed to become a registered psychologist.

Our award-winning teaching strategies and learning resources including simulation and competency-based assessment approaches.

The course is based on the scientist/practitioner model that rests firmly on a foundation of established knowledge and current evidence-based research.

As a student in our clinical training programs, you will have opportunities to develop clinical skills in our unique clinics embedded in our public mental health partners, Eastern Health and Barwon Health, and through placements in an array of community agencies. This lets you put your academic knowledge into the real-life application, as well as develops your professional identity and practice through the early adoption of supervision and professional learning plans.

Most clinical psychologists develop expertise in specific areas of practice in sub-specializations of clinical psychology. In addition to professional practice, clinical psychologists may be involved in research, teaching and supervision, program development and evaluation, public policy, and other activities that promote psychological health in individuals, families, and groups.

Deakin’s psychology courses are well regarded in the workplace, as are our graduates, with Deakin psychology students highly successful in gaining employment after graduation, and a significant number employed prior to the completion of their studies.

Campus Information

Melbourne Burwood

The Melbourne Burwood Campus is Deakin’s largest. A short trip from Melbourne’s central business district, Burwood offers the perfect balance between city lifestyle and suburban comfort. On campus you will find impressive buildings and world-class facilities, a wide range of learning and social spaces, and a relaxed atmosphere. If you enjoy getting outdoors between classes, the Melbourne Burwood Campus also sits alongside parkland, which is great for walking, jogging and cycling.

Geelong Waterfront Campus

Located in the heart of Geelong, the Geelong Waterfront Campus has spectacular views of the bay. Used as wool stores in the 19th century, this campus has been renovated to create an impressive, modern space that offers an inspiring study environment. The unique mix of old and new allows for engaging and creative spaces, and its central location means students can visit Geelong’s central business district between classes. In 2019 a new ferry travelling between Melbourne and Geelong was launched. The ferry offers a comfortable and convenient mode of transport. It docks a short walk from the Geelong Waterfront Campus. Train and bus services are also regularly available between Geelong and Melbourne.
