Fine Arts BFA - Print Media Concentration
What is a print? It could be defined as a work of art made up of ink pressed on paper. But ink is not required. Usually print exists in multiples (editions) printed from a matrix. But it can be singular (one of a kind). Print is usually thought of as being hand-made. But it can be printed from a machine (inkjet, laser cut, 3-d printing). Print Media embraces all of these possibilities. But more than this, we strive to produce smart and visually arresting work that is relevant to an ever-changing world.
Familiar tools of print include screenprint and relief (woodcut, linocut). Lithography, monotype and etching (aka intaglio) are lesser known but still in wide use by artists. Our labs and faculty provide access to all of these ideas and processes as well as large format inkjet, vinyl cutting, and industrial technologies such laser-cutting, 3-d printing, and computer-to-print.
Today, artists and cultural workers around the globe engage with print media as part of their practice. Print processes are continually adapted and re-invented as technology changes. The study of printmaking asks us to reflect upon and grapple with questions of multiplicity, cultural histories, authenticity and originality.
At UB, all Print Media courses are hands-on. Students develop practical knowledge of tools and materials they can apply to all areas of creative making and purpose driven thinking. In this journey, we help students recognize and build upon individual talents and interests. Engaging with Print Media in particular stimulates invention, discovery and investigation, while navigating oceans of precision, process and play.
The BFA degree focuses on intensive work in Print Media, supported by a smaller, more defined program of general studies in the liberal arts. Students in the BFA also take a 2-semester capstone course, resulting in a senior thesis exhibition. Because this option includes the development of a cohesive body of work, the BFA is considered particularly relevant for students who wish to continue on to an MFA program.
