Master of Civil Engineering (MCivilEng)

Civil engineers are responsible for the design and construction of our urban environments. This includes infrastructure like buildings, transportation systems, water and wastewater facilities, ports, bridges and more. The Master of Civil Engineering (MCivilEng) will teach you discipline-specific knowledge to help you build this infrastructure and improve people’s standard of living.

The MCivilEng degree will be offered in both research and taught options. The research pathway will incorporate either a 120-point or a 90-point thesis option. Students completing the research pathway or the taught pathway (with a 30 point research project) will be eligible for the award of Honours and may be able to progress to the PhD.

The 120-point pathway will be primarily for students who have already completed our 4-year BE(Hons) or equivalent. The 180-point is geared towards students who have a relevant Bachelors degree.

The MCivilEng programme is designed to cover the broad sub-disciplines of civil engineering available at the University of Auckland. It can either be awarded unendorsed, or endorsed in one of the following specialisations:

  • Coastal Engineering
  • Construction Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Water Engineering
