Bachelor of Midwifery

Through a partnership approach, midwives provide woman centred, evidence based care for women and babies throughout the childbearing journey in a variety of settings. Midwives play an important role in promoting the health and wellbeing of women and their families by supporting the woman's childbearing choices and providing expertise around pregnancy, birth, postnatal and the newborn period. Midwives collaborate with other health professionals to continue midwifery care in complex situations.

The Bachelor of Midwifery at CDU is aligned with the International Confederation of Midwives' definition of the midwife. Students require a high level of motivation, determination and organisation to successfully negotiate study and clinical experience requirements with work and family commitments. The online nature of the course requires students to be disciplined and committed in their study habits. Students should consider whether their family life and work commitments will support their attendance at placement and time available for study.

Placement may occur during and outside of the semester and students may be required to travel away from home to complete up to 6 weeks of placement at their own expense. Students need to be aware that:

  • placement is arranged by Charles Darwin University and dates are determined by the availability of places at the health service facility, therefore dates for placement may not be negotiable
  • students are required to attend the arranged placement to progress in the course
  • non-attendance at placement may only occur in extenuating circumstances. Childcare and work commitments are not extenuating circumstances for the purpose of placement
  • placements may include morning, evening, night duty, on-call and shifts on weekends and public holidays

There are inherent requirements for midwifery. Inherent requirements are the essential abilities, knowledge and skills to achieve course learning outcomes and to be able to safely practise as a midwife. Midwifery requires a degree of physical strength and mobility, endurance, communication and cognitive abilities for safe practice. Reporting obligations: Under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, CDU is required to register midwifery students with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and to notify AHPRA if a student has or develops a health impairment that may place the public at substantial risk of harm. Students have obligations under the National Law and are expected to understand their obligations prior to enrolling. More information available at NMBA Student Registration.

The Australian Nurse-Family Partnership Program (ANFPP) is a nurse-led home visiting program that supports women pregnant with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child to help them become the best mum possible. ANFPP mums are offered support and guidance during early pregnancy and on into their baby’s infancy and toddlerhood. The ANFPP is an important early investment into the future of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in local communities. 
As Senior Practitioner: Perinatal Mental Health and Parenting - ANFPP you will provide perinatal mental health and parenting expertise in the ANFPP workforce development team to improve the support of program staff to effectively address the challenges that many clients experience. You will contribute to the provision of reflective supervision to Nurse Supervisors and work closely with implementing sites in continuous quality improvement activities.

To be successful you will be a registered Psychologist or Social Worker with mental health experience, and hold a postgraduate qualification in a relevant field, and / or equivalent relevant experience. Your demonstrated expertise in infant attachment and complex trauma coupled with your ability to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues and stakeholders will see you excel in this role.

As Communication and Partnerships Officer your primary focus will be to achieve a Territory-wide, national and international profile for the Research Institute of Environment and Livelihoods (RIEL) by effectively communicating its research to a range of audiences and stakeholders.
Your demonstrated ability to produce effective and culturally appropriate communication alongside your excellent interpersonal and communication skills will see you succeed in the role. You will establish and maintain positive relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including Indigenous communities, research organizations, NGOs, government agencies, and funding bodies.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

India

Successful completion of the:
    •    All India Senior School Certificate;
    •    Indian School Certificate;
    •    Senior Secondary Certificate; and,
    •    State Board Examinations.
With an average score of at least 60% in the best 4 academic subjects including English.

IELTS Academic Module
A minimum overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0, except for:

  • B. Nursing requires a minimum overall score of 7.0 with no band less than 7.0.
  • B. Midwifery and B. Social Work require a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.5.
  • College of Education undergraduate courses require a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.5 (effective as of Semester 1 2021 and future intakes). 
  • Dual degrees Bachelor of Health Science/Master of Speech and Language Therapy and Bachelor of Health Science/Master of Occupational Therapy require an Academic IELTS of 7.0 with no score below a 6.5 in writing, speaking, reading and listening skills.
