Bachelor of Science in Biology: Concentration in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology

This program provides students with a broad background in systematic biology and conservation biology through coursework in evolutionary biology, ecology, botany and physiology. It prepares students for graduate school as well as work in the public sector with agencies such as state and national park services and in the private sector with in fields such as environmental consulting and conservation. It is recommended that students work closely with an academic advisor to select courses that best suit their career goals.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

General Information and Requirements

  • Candidates entering the bachelor’s programs in biology should have completed three years of high school mathematics and one year of high school chemistry to allow completion of the curriculum in a timely fashion
  • All major coursework must be completed with letter grades (CR/NC is not acceptable).
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.0 in all coursework is required to receive a degree in these programs.
  • To remain enrolled in a biology course, students must be prepared to provide copies of transcripts demonstrating completion of prerequisite courses with a grade of C- or better.
  • At least 12 units in biology must be completed at SF State.
  • Early in the first semester, and at regular intervals thereafter, students must consult with a biology advisor to plan a program of study. 

To be eligible for admission to SF State as a freshman, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Complete the required A-G college preparatory courses with a grade of C- or better

Due to the impact of COVID-19, SF State will accept grades of "Credit" or "Pass" for A-G college preparatory courses taken in Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall 2020 terms and during Winter, Spring or Summer 2021 terms.

2. Meet the GPA requirements based on residency or high school

Your high school grade point average (GPA) is calculated using all A-G college preparatory courses completed after 9th grade.

The CSU has temporarily suspend the use of ACT/SAT examinations in determining admission eligibility for the Fall 2021 - Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 - Spring 2023 admission cycles. First-time freshmen must meet the following GPA requirements:

3. Graduate from high school (diploma or GED)

?Your final high school transcript should show all of your grades and your date of graduation.

4. Meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement

?If you attended a US high school for at least 3 years, you meet the English Proficiency Requirement.

If you have attended a US high school for less than 3 years, you should be prepared to submit proof of English proficiency.

To be eligible for admission to SF State as a freshman, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Be academically prepared for college/university

Complete a secondary/high school curriculum that totals 12 years of primary-secondary education, be qualified to enter a university in your home country and have a good scholastic record from an accredited/recognized school.

2. Meet the GPA requirement

Have a a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) in the 4.0 grading scale or B- average in academic courses completed after 9th grade.

3. Graduate from high school 

You should have or will have, the equivalent of US high school completion

4. Meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement
