This course will appeal if you want to combine an understanding of the social world from different perspectives with a rigorous analysis of policy responses to social problems. You will examine theory and techniques from sociology alongside the analytical focus of social policy.
You’ll explore areas such as health, welfare and poverty, race and discrimination, inequality and exclusion. You’ll be able to take a range of optional units on topics such as the sociology of death, lobbying, justice and conflict. By the end of the degree you’ll have an understanding of how social institutions develop, operate and how they might be improved.
In your first year you'll combine a study of classical sociological theory with key issues in modern social policy. You’ll also learn about a range of social research methods including qualitative and quantitative research methods. Through tutorials focused on developing key academic skills in these areas, you’ll also learn how to evaluate data and information to develop your own arguments tailored to different audiences.
In your second year you'll expand and deepen your knowledge of research methods. You will also choose from a range of optional units looking at key sociological issues and policy areas.
In your final year you'll carry out a year-long dissertation and choose from a range of social science optional units.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
A Bachelor’s degree with a final overall result of at least a First Class.
To apply for this course you should have an undergraduate degree in psychology.
If you receive an offer you will need to obtain a Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) from the British Psychological Society (BPS).
If you do not have an undergraduate degree in psychology, we will consider applicants who have successfully completed a BPS accredited Masters's conversion degree.
In your application, you will need to provide a max. A 500-word personal statement which should explain
- (a) why you are interested in studying for an MSc in Applied Clinical Psychology and the interests and skills you particularly hope to develop on the course and
- (b) your research experience to date. As part of (b), you could describe key research teaching and assignments you have completed, your undergraduate dissertation project, or any research posts you have held. Please explain the skills and knowledge you have particularly gained from the research experience that you would bring to an MSc program.
