BSc (Hons) Psychology and Sociology with foundation year
The foundation year has an applied focus – students are encouraged and enabled to apply their theoretical knowledge to real world problems, such as mental health, psychological wellbeing and everyday problem-solving. You’ll also begin to develop the academic writing and independent learning skills necessary to study a scientific discipline. You’ll also begin to learn the basics of thinking and writing in social sciences.
On successful completion of the foundation year, you'll be eligible to progress onto the specialist psychology and sociology degree.
Solent's psychology and sociology degree is a contemporary and exciting course which combines the disciplines of sociology and psychology for students to develop the knowledge, application and skills to understanding the complexity of individuals and the societies in which they live.
The curriculum includes key areas of psychology and sociology, you will study subjects such as education; crime; social behaviours; therapy and counselling; power, politics and identity, education; media; social inequalities; migration; and race and ethnicity. You will develop scientific approaches to researching key issues from a sociological and psychological perspective. These topics, which include research methods, problem solving and manipulation of data, provide useful tools for a range of careers in healthcare, public sector, leadership, organisations, law enforcement, finance, research and IT.
This degree emphasises the practical application of psychology and sociology, with real-world assessments integrated throughout. You’ll also have the option to undertake work-based learning as part of your studies. In sociology modules you will reflect on real issues such as community empowerment, equity in the workplace, applied sociology in work environments.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
As a general guide, we look for qualifications that are equivalent to the British high school A-levels. A portfolio is also required for most of our art and design courses.
To be considered for entry to a foundation year (year 0 of a foundation year), students should hold the Standard XII with 50% or above.
For postgraduate courses, we look for qualifications that are equivalent to the British bachelor's degree. Students should hold a bachelor's degree, minimum 2nd division.
Foundation year:
IELTS 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.0 in each individual component
TOEFL IBT 71 with a minimum of 19 in in each individual component- TOEFL is only valid for EU students
or equivalent.
Undergraduate:
IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
or equivalent.
Postgraduate:
IELTS minimum 6.5 overall with minimum of 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in reading, listening and speaking
TOEFL IBT 92 with minimum of 22 in writing and a minimum of 19 in reading, listening and speaking
or equivalent.
