Diploma of Languages

The Diploma of Languages prepares students for the increasingly multilingual and international life of the 21st century. You will be taken on a language learning journey which is designed to engage you with the written, oral and cultural aspects of your chosen language or languages.

You can choose to study a wide selection of languages, many of which are not available at any other University in Australia.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

  • communicate proficiently and confidently in the principal studied language 
  • identify the structure and uses of the principal language studied 
  • demonstrate an understanding of the societies and cultures of the principal language studied, and its socio-historical context 
  • construct a schema of the connections between the principal language studied and its geographical, social and cultural origins 
  • recognise the importance of intercultural communication.

Acton campus

Our Acton campus is in the heart of Canberra - Australia's capital city - in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). From here it's an easy walk, bike ride or drive to some of Australia's most significant political and cultural institutions including Australian Parliament House. Amongst our modern lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, student residences and administration buildings, you'll find all the conveniences of a small suburb including cafes, bars, supermarkets, child care centres, a newsagency, post office and even a medical centre.

PSW Opportunity

The International Students studying in ANU, Canberra gets PSW of 3 years after completion of UG Programs.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Applicants who complete a recognized secondary/senior secondary/post-secondary/tertiary sequence of study will be assessed on the basis of an equivalent selection rank that is calculated upon application. A list of commonly observed international qualifications and corresponding admission requirements can be found here. Applicants must also meet any program-specific requirements that are listed below.

In order to achieve these outcomes, a competitive ranking of applicants may be adjusted to ensure access to ANU is a reality for brilliant students from countries across the globe. If required, the competitive ranking may further be confirmed on the basis of demonstrating higher-level English language proficiency.

A score of 70% or more with no section less than 65%

Academic IELTS An overall score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component of the test.

TOEFL paper based test A score of 550 with a TWE* score of 4.0.

TOEFL internet based test An overall score of 68, with a minimum of 18 in Writing.

Cambridge CAE Advanced (Post 2015) An overall score of 169 with a minimum of 162 in all sub-skills.

PTE Academic An overall score of 57 with a minimum score of 50 in each of the communicative skills.

This is an exit qualification only.

Admission to the Diploma of Languages is

  • by transfer only from an ANU degree program; and
