Doctor of Physiotherapy
The Department of Physiotherapy recently celebrated 25 years of excellence in physiotherapy education. The Doctor of Physiotherapy draws on the University of Melbourne's reputation for excellence in teaching and research to inspire and enable students to become outstanding physiotherapists ready to excel as world-class leaders in their chosen field.
Graduates will be work-ready and immediately employable following registration having gained diverse clinical experience in major hospitals and knowledge of primary healthcare and community engagement.
Led by highly credentialed and networked lecturers and mentors, as well as connections with leading hospitals, research institutes and the private sector, the Doctor of Physiotherapy is designed to meet the current and future needs of students, patients and the changing nature of the health workforce.
Graduates have the opportunity to pursue careers in a range of health settings including hospitals, private practice, sporting and rehabilitation facilities, community organisations or as an advisor to government or industry bodies. This degree provides opportunities to study and work overseas.
The course prepares students for the changing roles of the physiotherapist in areas such as chronic disease management, health promotion and prevention, emergency medicine, acute care and private practice. The clinical program builds progressively to independent practice, with approximately 37 weeks of clinical practice.
Key program features include advanced theoretical knowledge in areas such as pharmacology, leadership and management, and inter-professional education, including a faculty student conference.

Job Opportunity Potential

PSW Opportunity
- 2 years of PSW post completion of a minimum 2 year Degree or post-completion of a packaged Degree for 2 years.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Requirement into Ph.D.:
- To take part, you must be enrolled in a Ph.D. at the University of Melbourne. Your thesis topic must relate to the Ph.D. Program theme.
- When you join a Ph.D. The program, you will remain enrolled in your current department.
- You can join a Ph.D. Program at any time during your candidature. You will remain part of the program until you complete your doctoral studies.
TOEFL – you need a score from a minimum of 577+ including a score of at least 4.5 in the Test of Written English for a paper-based test. Or a score of at least 79 and scores of at least 21 for writing, 18 for speaking, 13 for reading, 13 for listening for an internet-based test.
IELTS – you need a score from a minimum of 6.5 or more in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0.
Pearson Test of English – you need an overall score from a minimum between 58-64 inclusive and achieve no PTE communicative skills score below 50.
Cambridge English, Advanced/Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – you need a Cambridge English Score from a minimum 176 with no skill below 169.
