Black Studies is the study of the history, culture, socio-economic and political development of people of African descent, and their contributions to world civilizations. The principle geographic domains of this academic discipline are the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, South America, Africa, and increasingly Western Europe, where large communities of persons of African descent reside. The field features a diversity of academic approaches, as well as intellectual and practical interests, and encompasses an array of disciplines, including History, English, Political Science, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Art, Music, Urban Studies, and Religion.

The Black Studies degree affords a student the opportunity to pursue a graduate education and/or a variety of career fields. Black Studies Program majors/minors can be found in a variety of professions and occupational areas, including: Business Management, Medicine, City Planning, Museum, Community Development, Performing and Visual Arts, Education, Psychology, Film, Public Health, Government, Radio, Journalism, Religion, International Relations, Social Work, Law, Television.

- 12 to 36 months (OPT duration depends on the major studied).
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
The following admission requirements apply to students who have not completed any college-level course work after completing secondary school.
- Cumulative secondary school GPA equivalent to a 2.3 on the US grading scale for most programs. The College of Engineering requires a 3.0 and the College of Education and Human Services requires a 2.5.
- Proof of English proficiency.
- Students who have attended a US high school or secondary school in another country that follows the US high school curriculum must submit ACT or SAT scores. These students must submit a minimum total ACT score of 16, or a minimum old total SAT score of 770 (before March 1, 2016), or a minimum new total SAT score of 880 (after March 1, 2016). Students who are applying to the Honors College and student athletes must comply with NCAA eligibility requirements. - Official transcripts of academic work and completion certificates from each secondary school and university attended. PHOTOCOPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. If transcripts are not in English, please include an official/certified English translation of the original documents. Where to submit materials
