Economics and Mathematics (Industry) BSc Hons
Develop a powerful ‘intellectual toolbox’ to understand the world economy, business strategies, and financial dynamics, and gain valuable experience of these principles in action during your paid placement year in industry.
How can governments prevent house price bubbles? What are the economic effects of immigration? What price should a product have? If these types of questions intrigue you, and if you have a numerate mind, this degree can help launch your career in industry, finance, the public sector, government or consulting.
You will be taught by leading academics and expert researchers working at the cutting-edge of the field as you examine real-world issues. You do not need an Economics A-Level as all first years study the Principles of Economics. Your A level in Mathematics or Further Mathematics will enable you to develop numeracy skills from day one.
We will introduce you to theory, evidence and policy analysis. This allows you to understand fundamental issues and topical concerns. In the first year, you will study Calculus, Further Calculus and Linear Algebra as well as Economics.
In your second year, you will progress to Computational Mathematics and build upon your knowledge of Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics. You can also select topics such as Game Theory, Econometrics and Intermediate Macroeconomics and Microeconomics.
Your third year is spent in industry. You will be supported in securing a placement, with past students joining companies such as IBM, Lloyds Bank, Microsoft, PwC and the Bank of England. Roles on offer range from project management and logistics to investment, business development and risk. Most placements are in the UK, but there are some options overseas.
Your final year sees you choosing from modules including Health Economics to Industrial Organisation, Medical Statistics to Advanced Macroeconomics; you can tailor your studies to suit your aspirations. High-performing students also have the chance to write a dissertation.
By the time you graduate, you will have acquired mathematical and analytical skills in demand by employers.
You will have support from our careers team from day one, helping with internships, placements and graduate employment. We will supply training in CV writing, interview assessment centres and telephone interviews, helping you with your future career ambitions.
The University will use all reasonable effort to support you to find a suitable placement for your studies. While a placement role may not be available in a field or organisation that is directly related to your academic studies or career aspirations, all placement roles offer valuable experience of working at a graduate level and gaining a range of professional skills.
If you are unsuccessful in securing a suitable placement for your third year, you will be able to transfer to the equivalent non-placement degree scheme and would continue with your studies at Lancaster, finishing your degree after your third year. The University offers a range of shorter placement and internship opportunities for which you would be welcome to apply.
